Rockstar Apologizes For The Wait, Not The Hack, In First GTA 6 Leak Statement

UPDATE: Hours after Rockstar’s statement, the leaker directly disputed Rockstar’s “nearly there” claim, releasing a four-minute clip of Lucia’s prologue and insisting the build is recent and the game is “not ready at all” for November 19.

After a week of saying nothing while its biggest game leaked in pieces across the internet, Rockstar Games finally spoke Wednesday.

The statement, posted to the studio’s social accounts one day before the Netflix Extended Look, calls the situation “heartbreaking for our team” and says this is obviously not how the studio intended anyone to see the game after all this time.

Then it does something Rockstar almost never does. It apologizes.

Not for the breach. For the wait.

The Apology Is For Making Fans Wait

Rockstar says it is very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has, and it lists what it means: finishing the game, sharing details, releasing official gameplay, and giving the community what it wants to know.

That is a remarkable thing for this company to put in writing.

Rockstar built its entire marketing identity on silence. Two trailers in three years. No interviews, no developer diaries, no roadmaps. The scarcity was the strategy.

Wednesday’s statement reads like an admission that the strategy stopped working, and that the leaker filled a vacuum Rockstar left open on purpose.

Compare it to 2022. After that breach, Rockstar confirmed a network intrusion, said an unauthorized third party illegally accessed its systems, and declared itself extremely disappointed. It was a corporate incident notice.

This one never confirms a breach happened at all. It doesn’t say how the footage got out, doesn’t mention an investigation, and doesn’t reference the federal subpoenas Take-Two obtained last week or the gameplay systems the clips exposed.

It’s an apology letter to fans, not a disclosure.

Rockstar Grand Theft Auto 6 Leak Hack Message

“Nearly There” On A Game Launching In Three Months

Buried in that apology is the actual news.

Describing how long it has taken to finish the game, Rockstar adds a parenthetical: “nearly there!”

GTA 6 launches November 19. That is under three months out, with pre-orders already sold at $80 and $100, and the studio is telling the public the game is nearly finished rather than finished.

For a game already delayed more than once, “nearly” is doing a lot of work. To be clear, Rockstar reaffirmed the November 19 date and gave no hint of another delay.

The Extended Look is also still on for Thursday, premiering on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET before hitting Rockstar’s YouTube channel and website at 9 p.m. ET. Rockstar says it took longer than wanted to get ready and that the studio knows it needs to exceed expectations.

One line is stranger than the rest. Rockstar says the intended game experience “may now be impacted by some spoilers” and asks fans to wait for November 19.

What The Statement Refuses To Say

Cyberleek is never named. The manifesto is never acknowledged. The demand to end digital pre-orders goes unanswered. The memecoin goes unmentioned. So do the reported claims about employee data being dumped by a second group.

And the disc question, the one that started this entire fight, does not appear anywhere.

That silence is a choice, and it mirrors the approach Stop Killing Games took when it repudiated the leaker without naming it. You do not hand an adversary the legitimacy of a response.

But the fans noticed. Scroll the replies under a statement that thanks the community for its support, and the physical media crowd is still there, still asking for discs, on the one day Rockstar chose to speak directly to them.

The rest of the reaction skewed supportive, with developers thanked by name and fans lining up behind the team.

The strongest argument against the leaks was never the copyright claim or the stock damage. It was the one Stop Killing Games made when it told supporters to stop funding Cyberleek: the people absorbing this are the developers, not the executives who shrugged at the disc question in the first place.

Rockstar just spent an entire statement making that same point, in the first person.

Related: A federal court granted Take-Two subpoenas to unmask Cyberleek, the leaks’ multibillion-dollar stock hit, and the manifesto demanding an end to digital pre-orders.
