UPDATE Aug. 21: The same source has gone much further: Paramount/WB see Pattinson as the next Tom Cruise, and Ellison is going all in on Batman, with Reeves and Pattinson offered whatever they want.
Robert Pattinson may have picked a very good December to be in the middle of two of the biggest movies on the calendar.
Now we’re told his work in Dune: Part Three is the real thing.
“Pattinson is in top form and a strong early Oscar favorite for Dune 3,” a source tells us.
To be clear on the sourcing, this is an insider claim, not a studio statement. The film is four months out and no awards body has voted on anything.
But the claim is specific, and it lands at a moment where the structure of the race actually supports it.

Scytale Is The Role That Could Do It
Pattinson plays Scytale, the Bene Tleilaxu Face Dancer at the center of the conspiracy against Paul Atreides in Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah.
Denis Villeneuve gave everyone the first real look at him in the March teaser. Bleached hair, pale, a face that will not sit still.
Pattinson described the part at the teaser launch as a character where you cannot tell whose side he is on, and said that is what makes him interesting.
That is the version of a villain that voters respond to. Ambiguity gets nominated. Menace does not.
It also gives this installment the thing the first two were missing. Dune and Dune: Part Two were spectacle first.
Messiah is a story about a man being dismantled, and Scytale is the one holding the tools.
Dune Has Eight Oscars And Zero Acting Nominations
Dune and Dune: Part Two were both Best Picture nominees. Between them they won eight Academy Awards.
Every single one was technical. Cinematography, editing, score, production design, sound, visual effects.
Not one acting nomination across two films and a cast that includes Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin. Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha generated months of buzz and never made the ballot.
Villeneuve himself has never been nominated for Best Director, and he was passed over for both films.
So the franchise has a documented ceiling, and it sits exactly where our source is pointing. The Academy has been happy to hand this series everything except a performance.

Pattinson Is Running Against Himself
The bigger obstacle is Pattinson’s own year.
He is also the suitor Antinous in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is now the highest-grossing IMAX release in history and is sitting at the top of most Best Picture boards.
He has Primetime as well, Lance Oppenheim’s A24 drama inspired by To Catch a Predator, which pundits have been flagging as a Best Actor vehicle since it was announced.
Two supporting turns and a lead in the same calendar year is a campaign problem before it is an opportunity. Studios do not coordinate with each other, and voters do not sort it out on the actor’s behalf.
What makes our source’s read credible is that the numbers favor Arrakis.
Gold Derby ranked Pattinson’s 2026 roles by Oscar potential last month and put Scytale on top, and the reasoning was arithmetic rather than artistic. He has fewer supporting rivals in Dune 3 than he does in The Odyssey.
Nolan’s film is stacked. Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page and Samantha Morton are all fighting over the same handful of slots, and pundits have spent the summer arguing that most of those parts are too small to convert.
Scytale has no such traffic. He is the antagonist of the movie.
For now, Variety’s 2027 predictions, updated this week, list Dune: Part Three in Adapted Screenplay and Casting.

And Then There’s Gotham
There is a version of the next two years where Pattinson runs an Oscar campaign and a Batman campaign at the same time.
The Batman Part II slid to February 18, 2028, with Warner Bros. citing post-production, and we recently reported on the rumor that rewrites added Robin(s) plus more Penguin and Joker. Production is shooting nights in Glasgow right now, where set video shows off the battle-damaged Batmobile.
Warner Bros. is in the unusual position of owning both. The prestige play and the tentpole are the same actor.
An acting nomination out of Dune 3 would reframe how the studio markets him in Gotham, and it would settle an argument that has followed the casting since 2019 about whether Pattinson is a serious dramatic actor who happens to wear the cowl.
The Commercial Half Is Already Confirmed
The awards conversation is showing up alongside a demand story that is no longer speculative. The Oscar buzz arrives with Dune: Part Three already a commercial juggernaut, with IMAX 70mm and premium format tickets already selling at record pace.
AMC CEO Adam Aron apologized Tuesday for the ticketing meltdown when presales opened and said traffic ran roughly three times what the chain saw for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
It’s also taking on Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday directly.
Add the IMAX Insider screenings on December 14, 15 and 17, four days ahead of the wide release, and Warner Bros. has built a word-of-mouth runway that functions as an awards runway.
A film that opens enormous in December, holds IMAX exclusively for three weeks, and has a performance people want to argue about is the exact shape of a movie that stays alive through January.
Villeneuve has never needed help selling tickets. He has needed help getting his actors on a ballot.
Our source says this is the one that does it.
