Kevin Feige told the BilibiliWorld crowd in Shanghai how Robert Downey Jr. reacted to being offered Doctor Doom, and the answer doubles as the entire Avengers: Doomsday marketing campaign in one sentence.
“His exact words were, ‘I played the best hero… I can play the best villain,'” Feige said.
‘You Need The Greatest Actor In The World’
Feige also laid out the case for why Doom demanded this casting in the first place.
“He’s a scientist, he’s a technologist, he’s a sorcerer and a ruler,” Feige said. “And to embody that complexity, that tragedy, that charisma of the character, you need the greatest actor in the world.”
Note the words Feige reaches for: complexity, tragedy, charisma. Marvel is not selling a heavy in a metal mask. It is selling a co-lead.
That tracks with Doom dominating every piece of official material so far, and with the character’s leaked motivation, which remains rumor until Marvel says otherwise. The event also saw the release of new concept art for Avengers: Doomsday, featuring the ensemble roster.
RDJ, Evans And Hemsworth Beam In From The Set
Downey also showed up at BilibiliWorld the only way he could: in a video message from the Doomsday set, flanked by Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, with on-screen text reading “We are on the set of Avengers 5: Doomsday.”
Cameras rolling in July, five months from release, puts the production squarely in additional-photography territory.
And for the leak crowd, Evans standing there in official messaging is the tell. Per the plot document John Campea vouched for on the record — rumor until Marvel says otherwise — Steve Rogers has been living in the Fantastic Four’s universe with Peggy and their son. Marvel keeps putting him front and center anyway.
Downey doesn’t post much about Doomsday, but when he does, it maps onto the leak. Now Feige is doing the same thing from a stage.
