Review: X-Treme X-Men #7

 

Writer Greg Pak continues his very absorbing story of young Kurt Waggoner in the other-dimensional opus that is X-Treme X-Men #7.

Separated from his reality-hopping teammates, sworn to kill evil Xaviers in other planes, Kurt returned to his home planet, a world of sentient robots that have cut the number of their “living” native entities down to one: Kurt!

Now in a zoo, an alternate Sage in a very dramatic role as leader of SWORD fights for the boy’s life and teams with our gal Dazzler and Howlett to free the boy from  ruse that has him thinking his parents are still alive.

The truth about the fate of his parents, and Kurt’s own retaliation, will probably echo in his character for years to come.

Pak spins a wonderful yarn here, full of heart and angst. Any old Nightcrawler fan will yearn for the return of the original by seeing what this youngster goes through and overcomes. This saga is a great jumping-on point for new readers, as will be the forthcoming #7.1 featuring the return of the Brood (and the Acanti!).

I like the artwork in this book, I really do. I just wish the tones and/or colors were not so dark and murky, even if they do aid this particular story. For this type of unreal adventure, I just like the brights of the primaries.

Greg Pak has a great successor to the Exiles franchise here, and I am hoping readers – X and otherwise – will give it the attention it deserves. Great read!
