Review: Flashpoint: Abin Sur – The Green Lantern #1

Flashpoint has hit the DC Universe causing phenomenal changes to not only the world of our once beloved heroes — but also the Universe!

Much as the Earth is being torn apart by the war between the Amazons and the Atlanteans, the cosmos is in collision, as well, with the two previous Green Lantern events still being played out! That’s not all, as the Guardians first protectors of the universe are also thrown into the mix! And there’s no Hal Jordan, to boot!

If you have been worried about Flashpoint nullifying the DCU completely, or even the large events that we all followed (and paid for!), your worries should be relieved as this issue incorporates the Green Lantern mythos — and more so the past couple years worth — into a tantalizing tale leaving you longing for more! They are all there — sorry, no spoilers. It’s worth the read!

This issue could be looked at as the beginning of a modern re-telling of the Green Lantern origin, weaving the old Green Lantern into the new Flashpoint — resulting in an all new(?) Emerald Icon. Abin Sur is sent on a mission to Earth — and Earth has no idea what’s coming!

In a single issue, Adam Schlagman manages to bring us up to speed on the Green Lantern Flashpoint Universe, incorporate that into the events taking place on Earth, and give us a tease as what’s to come. There is not much action to be had in this book, but don’t let that dissuade you, as there is a vast amount of set-up. And it’s all worthwhile — and worth every penny!

The art chores from Felipe Massafera and company are well done, with bright colors and cosmic backgrounds, overall more than satisfying. Throw a little action into next issue and watch Massafera — and Abin Sur — shine!

If you are on the fence about picking up the Flashpoint titles for fear they may be meaningless, take off the Yellow Power Ring — and don the Green! Flashpoint: Abin Sur – The Green Lantern #1 should be on the pull lists for all Green Lantern fans!
