Sony put the opening 30 minutes of Resident Evil in front of audiences in Los Angeles, New York, and Dallas on September 1, ahead of Zach Cregger’s live Reddit AMA, and the reactions that came back are the ones a studio dreams about seventeen days before release.
Attendees posting from the three cities called the opening unhinged, said it plays like Cregger’s version of the survival horror games, and one horror account counted five real jump scares inside the half hour.
The recurring theme: people who walked in curious, or outright skeptical, walked out sold on September 18.
Press saw the same footage and came back with the same read. The Playlist reports the half hour was heavy on dread and sudden scares, with a constant sense that something terrible is waiting just outside the frame, and that it’s also genuinely funny, the Cregger mix that made Barbarian and Weapons work.
The Opening Is The Easy Part
Then Cregger twisted the knife: the strong opening is his hero’s gentlest stretch.
“This is as good as he has it for the rest of the movie,” he said of Austin Abrams’ character.
Asked if he’d survive the movie himself, Cregger laughed that there’s no chance — “I would die so fast” — before adding, “it only gets so much worse than this.”
His plot summary runs one line: “Dude’s got to get from point A to point B. Sh-t gets really bad.”
He described the approach as “chaotic, primal and grounded” — a linear, locked-in survival story following a single protagonist, told through the visual language of the video games, with deliberate limits on the franchise’s more fantastical elements.
