Resident Evil Tracking: Zach Cregger’s Reboot Is Now The Hottest Movie On The Board

Resident Evil Tracking: Zach Cregger’s Reboot Is Now The Hottest Movie On The Board

Six weeks before it opens, Resident Evil isn’t just tracking well. It’s tracking better than every other movie in theaters’ immediate future.

The Quorum’s new eight-week tracking chart, published by Puck, has Zach Cregger’s reboot at 51 percent awareness, up three points, and 52 percent interest ahead of its September 18 release.

Both numbers are the highest of all sixteen films on the board.

The Quorum’s own takeaway goes further, asking whether Cregger is becoming the next butts-in-seats filmmaker after Resident Evil hit new highs across every tracking metric among men under 35.

That’s the survey firm saying the director is the draw.

For scale: 52 percent interest is higher than Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey posted eleven days before release, and that movie opened to $120.5 million domestic. Cregger is above that line a month and a half out.

The Quorum polls everyday moviegoers on upcoming releases every two weeks, measuring awareness (have you heard of it?) and interest (do you want to see it?). It measures actual public demand, not studio math.

The Weapons Effect Is Showing Up In The Data

The three-point awareness bump lands right where you’d expect it.

Sony dropped the full trailer hours before Cregger’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, and this chart’s polling window covers the aftermath.

The pitch underneath it has been consistent for months. Cregger told Empire the film is a “relentless” horror gauntlet that was his idea from the start, and Sony’s featurette campaign has hammered that this reboot is about dread, not action.

After Barbarian and last summer’s breakout Weapons, the survey data says audiences are buying the director’s name as the reason to show up. For a franchise whose previous film era ran on Milla Jovovich and diminishing returns, that’s a full reset of the sell.

Sony Owns The Top Of The Board

The same chart has Sony’s Insidious: Out of the Further in second place at 47 percent awareness and 48 percent interest for August 21.

That’s one studio holding the two hottest titles in tracking, both horror, back to back on the calendar.

And Resident Evil is beating everything opening sooner, including Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie at 46 percent awareness, a family sequel with a five-week head start on the release calendar.

The Runway Is The Story Now

Interest is parked at the top of the chart while awareness keeps climbing, and Sony still has six weeks of campaign left to spend.

Every point of awareness added from here converts against the strongest interest score in tracking.

The question that hung over this project from day one was whether audiences wanted a Resident Evil reboot at all. The survey data just answered it, and the answer has Cregger’s name on it.

Resident Evil opens in theaters September 18, written and directed by Zach Cregger and starring Austin Abrams. For the full chart, see our summer tracking roundup.
