The movie keeps count.
Zach Cregger answered r/movies questions live on the night of September 1, posting from Sony’s Los Angeles screening of Resident Evil as the thread ran north of 1,200 comments.
And the answer that matters most to anyone who grew up rationing handgun ammo came when a fan asked what a film can actually keep from a survival horror game once the gameplay is gone.
“I love the resource management aspect of the games and it was really important to me to bring that to the movie,” Cregger wrote. “You will know how many bullets are in his gun. You will care when he misses a shot. That’s one of the things that makes the games feel so intense and it translates really well into the film.”
Then he teased a second mechanic.
“I also want viewers to be keenly aware of his health as he progresses. Won’t say much about that, but it’s another way to utilize the game mechanic that heightens the narrative engine of the movie.”
Porting The Rules, Not The Plot
That is the clearest description yet of what this reboot takes from Capcom.
Cregger’s Resident Evil is an original story — no Leon, no Chris, no Spencer Mansion — and the loudest question sitting in the thread before his answers started was why an original story needs the name at all.
The bullets-and-health answer is his response in practice: the movie adapts how the games feel to play. Scarcity. Damage. The dread of an empty chamber.
It’s the same pitch he has made all campaign — a relentless, one-long-sequence ride built on dread instead of action — now with the game mechanics attached.
RE4 Is “Comfort Food,” Village Broke Him
Asked to pick a favorite game, Cregger went where the fans hoped.
“4 is the one that I’ve played the most. It’s the nearest and dearest to my heart. I love how big it is. I love how it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s like comfort food. But honestly I love 7/8/9 and 2 as well.”
The scariest moment in the series, for him, is the giant baby in the basement of House Beneviento in Village. “The sounds that thing makes is just pure evil,” he wrote, adding that playing it in VR was “one of the few times I’ve ever noped out of anything, game or movie, as an adult. Scared me for real.”
The wall of Whitest Kids U’ Know questions got theirs answered too — Sexy Fawn and the Grapist remain in his personal rotation — and yes, he’d eaten two hot dogs that day. “Not even lying.”
The Shining Was “The First Hit”
Asked for the moment that made him a horror director, Cregger went back to the Overlook.
“Two little girls in the hallway of the Overlook Hotel. Wrecked me as a kid. The Shining was like the first hit of smack. I’ll be chasing that high for the rest of my life.”
His directing influences are “the usual suspects”: Fincher, the Coens, Kubrick, Gaspar Noé, Spielberg. His favorite endings are The Vanishing (“not the remake”), Audition, and Drag Me to Hell — “But they aren’t cathartic. Unless you like evil. Which… is… a thing for folks.”
Three Peas In A Pod
The night’s biggest non-Resident Evil reveal was about what comes next: Cregger said The Flood, his 2028 movie for New Line, “might be the most unsettling” thing he has made, and that he wrote Weapons, Resident Evil, and The Flood in one burst after Barbarian — three scripts he calls “3 peas in a pod.”
