Patrick Dempsey wants to play Marvel’s Doctor Strange

Patrick Demsey of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy told the LA Times Hero Complex he would be up for playing Doctor Strange, Marvel Comics’ Sorcerer Supreme.

Apparently, the cast of Anatomy are big fans of Marvel Comics and note: Disney owns both ABC and Marvel.

“I’ve been lobbying for that,” said Dempsey. “There’s a whole bunch of people [among the ‘Grey’s’ crew] who are into comics and Marvel, too, on the set and they’re like, ‘Doctor Strange, that’s the one you should do.’ It would be fantastic. It’d be a great TV show, especially for HBO or something like that. I don’t know if I’d necessarily do another show, a drama, that’s 24 episodes again. HBO you’re at 13 and I think that’s much better. It’s just so hard to sustain the quality after three years if you’re doing 24, 25 episodes a year. It all depends on who you have as a writing team — it’s how you set it up, what’s the tone and making sure you’re not locked into this one-season success [mentality], you can’t be afraid to think beyond that.”

Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President and producer on the recent Thor and Captain America: First Avenger movies, has mentioned interest in Doctor Strange before.

“I think ‘Black Panther’ and Wakanda has some amazing potential to be a feature film. ‘Doctor Strange,’ as you’ve mentioned. There are some obscure titles, too, like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ I think they’ve been revamped recently in a fun way in the book,” Feige told MTV News.

Doctor Stephen Strange is the master of the mystic arts (or was in the comics) that uses various spells and artifacts to safeguard the universe and earth from not only magical threats – but anything that is a perceived dangerous. One of the more powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, Strange has worked side by side the likes of the Hulk, Namor and the Silver Surfer in The Defenders, the Avengers, and just about every other character in the Marvel U – his role is significant, to say the least. That role being Sorcerer Supreme: “practitioner of the mystic or magic arts who has greater skills than all others or commands a greater portion of the ambient magical energies than any other organism on a given world or dimension.”
