Recently it was reported that the sequel for Pacific Rim depended on how well the movie did in China, with the Guillermo del Toro Jaeger vs. Kaiju flick opening there today.

Well, according to early box office estimates, the Chinese responded favorably to Pacific Rim as it scored $9 million at the box office giving Warner Bros. their best ever opening in China.

Pacific Rim debuted so big that it out performed Harry Potter in China by 23%, as well as taking 70% of the country’s box office gross.

Deadline reports that Pacific Rim will more than likely have a sequel even though U.S. audiences didn’t respond to the movie where it currently sits at under $100 million domestically.

It’s noted that as Warner Bros. only invested 25% of the Pacific Rim budget, that the sequel falls on Legendary Entertainment CEO Thomas Tull’s shoulders, who previously mentioned he would like it to be a franchise.

It’s also said even with the favorable international box office response it’s unknown if Pacific Rim will turn a profit due to the high-budget required for all the special effects.

Currently, Pacific Rim has a worldwide total of around $226 million.

Recently, Guillermo del Toro even spoke about what might be explored in a Pacific Rim sequel stating it would feature a Jaeger-Kaiju hybrid as well as a Gypsy Danger version 2.0.
