NYCC 2011: Smallville Retrospective Panel Recap

picAt the Smallville Retrospective Panel that took place at this past weekend’s New York Comic Con, they showed off a 90 minute video “Smallville Retrospective,” which will be part of the Smallville: The Complete Series Box Set.

This panel was everything the title claimed it would be. It was a summarization of the entire series, with highlights from the pilot and other episodes. The progression of the series was illustrated through clips from various episodes, behind the scenes action and commentary from the writers, actors and directors. The video gave a fresh look into one of my favorite television series of all time. It also provides the viewer the opportunity to hear directly from the creators and the writers about their thought processes into the direction they wanted to take Smallville. This included writing more fan favorite episodes containing various other DC comic book heros (Aquaman, Flash, Green Arrow, etc.) which was, in fact, made necessary by the departures of Kristen Kreuk and Michael Rosenbaum. Overall, this is an excellent series re-cap and contains various information die hard Smallville fans will thoroughly enjoy.

Some interesting tidbits:

• Smallville was originally set to end with the 8th season when it was movied to Thursdays. But when the ratings actually rose, the show was ordered to continue.

• John Glover, who played Lionel Luthor, was not the first actor for the part. Another actor dropped out, and Glover only had a couple days to decide. He was told it would be a couple days of shooting, with the possibility of more.

• The show’s creators originally pitched a Lois Lane in college series, but then WB came back to them with Superman.

• John Schneider based his role of playing Clark’s father, off his own relationship with his son, who has Asperger’s Syndrome.

• Allison Mack, who played Chloe Sullivan, begged the show not to kill off her character in the final episode.

There was more shown, all of which can be found on the Smallville: The Complete Series Box Set on-sale November 29th, 2011.
