[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8925:]]With Independence Day 2 getting a recently announced July 3, 2015 release, it has also become known that the original film’s star, Will Smith, will not be back for the sequel.

Director Roland Emmerich stated having Will Smith would be too expensive for “ID Forever Part 1,” as well as too big of a name, but we do learn there will be some new and returning characters.

“Will Smith can not come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name,” Emmerich told the NY Daily News. “It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new.”

No plot details are known about Independence Day 2, but Emmerich offered that it’s not a total reboot, but something unusual.

Currently, it’s rumored the movie takes place 20 years after Independence Day with the aliens returning through a worm hole; however, humanity may be better armed this time as they have adapted the alien technology.

Independence Day launched the career of Will Smith bringing in around over $800 million worldwide, which would be somewhere around $1.1 billion in today’s dollars.
