We can add another character that will not be appearing in The Avengers 2, “Age Of Ultron,” and that is with S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg.

Joss Whedon recently stated that Hank Pym will not be a part of the movie or a part of the origin for Ultron (but will be in Ant-Man), and now we learn there isn’t room for Coulson as well.

Speaking with the AP, Whedon says the following when asked if it’s possible The Avengers 2 will see Coulson’s return:

He could. Right now it’s not something I’m pursuing because I have so much going on in Avengers 2. Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie. That’s better than the other thing.

As fans know, Agent Coulson seemingly perished at the hands of Loki in The Avengers movie; however, Clark Gregg is returning to reprise the character this Fall on ABC with the new TV series Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It’s been said that series will deal with Coulson’s return so why would Whedon have to explain it in The Avengers 2? It’s possible Marvel Studios doesn’t want to bridge the S.H.I.E.L.D series directly to the sequel.

There could also be the fact that Coulson seemed to be used for a specific purpose in the Marvel Studios Phase One movies which was to bind the Avengers characters together. It’s possible another character may be doing something similar for Phase Two.

The Avengers 2 assembles May 1, 2015 with Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie on August 1, 2014 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015..
