Marvel Comics has released the deepest look yet at its Midnight Universe, publishing first-look interior pages from all three debut issues along with the covers for Midnight Spider-Man #3, Midnight Fantastic Four #3, and Midnight X-Men #3. The issues arrive on December 16.
The line itself launches October 7, when all three #1s hit stores together as the only Marvel comics released that day, a first for the publisher.
Marvel originally announced a staggered rollout beginning in August before pulling everything into a single unified launch day.
So let’s call this what it is: Marvel’s answer to DC’s Absolute Universe, the line currently crushing Marvel in comic shops.
Doc Ock Is Building Something Worse Than Spider-Man
Midnight Spider-Man #3 is titled “The Parker Incident.”
Peter Parker is desperately hunting for a way to reclaim his humanity while Oscorp hunts him. The company sees the urban legend called the Spider-Man as its first breakthrough toward a future where death itself is optional.
And deep inside Oscorp’s most secret labs, Otto Octavius uses what the company learned from Peter to engineer the world’s second synthetic mutant, a creature built to replace him entirely.
Steve Beach paints the #3 cover — shrieking lab monkeys clawing at their cages and a dripping, half-transformed hand — and his newly released concept art shows how completely this version breaks from the classic costume.
There is no suit. Peter is shirtless with the spider fused into the center of his chest, its legs spreading under his skin like veins, and he covers his face with whatever works: a red hood, boxing wraps, a bandana with a pair of goggles.
Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson says what the spider is, and what it is doing to Peter, stays a mystery the series will unravel slowly, and warns that “the body horror escalation from issue to issue is extreme.”
He also says the book’s fringe science was built to keep delivering new horrors 25, 50, even 100-plus issues down the road, which says plenty about how long Marvel intends this line to run.
Cyclops Is The Last Of The X-Men
The new artwork confirms how far Jonathan Hickman is going.
Marvel’s own description says the Midnight X-Men #3 cover shows Cyclops, the last of the X-Men, taking a young mutant under his wing, while the book’s larger conflict is a holy war fought in the shadows between mutants, humans, and the Empyres, this universe’s vampires.
Marvel’s plot description for issue #3 is short and grim: the mutants are gone, mercy went with them, and the fight is waged with weapons built by man and heaven alike.
Dike Ruan’s cover arrives in the line’s Cloaked Cover treatment — nearly all black, with the full artwork hidden until you open the issue — a narrow strip revealing a bearded, visored Cyclops and his young charge beneath a looming, blood-mouthed blue giant.
The first-look pages set the tone: nuns and a smiling cardinal inside a cathedral, a blood-red feeding, what appears to be Magneto and his inner circle looking down on the city, and ghouls getting blasted apart.
Hickman has called the project “the most excited I’ve been in years.”
The Fantastic Four Go To The Atomic Bomb Site
Midnight Fantastic Four #3 sends the team to the Jornada del Muerto desert in New Mexico, where Oppenheimer and the Los Alamos labs detonated the first atomic bomb.
What they find there is the residue of another world, leaking through a crack in the firmament, the barrier between our reality and whatever sits on the other side.
Benjamin Percy describes his book as an origin story where Reed doesn’t know Sue, Johnny, or Ben when things begin, and the “family” that eventually forms is more toxic, more complicated, and nothing like the one fans know. The entire FF mythology is rebuilt through cosmic horror.
Kev Walker handles both the interior art and the cover, and the first-look pages deliver: a young Reed alone at a wall of machines, characters behind bars, a plane flying straight into a storm cloud with a face, and a lightning-lashed castle laboratory pulled right out of Frankenstein.
This Is Marvel’s Absolute Play
Now the part Marvel won’t say out loud.
Absolute Batman #1 launched in October 2024. Two years later, to the month, Marvel is launching its own line of biggest-icon heroes rebuilt from zero in a darker universe, handed to A-list writers with free rein, under the same naming grammar: one ominous word in front of the hero.

Marvel just midnight-ed Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four, and notably didn’t build the line around Blade and Ghost Rider, even though the Midnight name had everyone expecting Midnight Sons.
The reason is on the sales charts.
DC took the No. 1 publisher spot from Marvel for the first time this century on the strength of the Absolute line, and ICv2’s most recent quarterly numbers put DC at 34.7% of the comic shop market to Marvel’s 29.4%.
It’s DC’s second straight quarter on top, and the widest lead either publisher has held in over two decades.
Absolute Batman has moved more than six million copies, sells around 500,000 copies an issue, according to Scott Snyder, sent its first issue to an eleventh printing, and drove the greenlight for the Absolute Batman animated series. It was still topping the weekly sales charts this month with issue #23.
Our own insiders spelled it out back in June: DC is “killing it in comics,” and the Absolute line pointed the way.
Marvel’s answer now arrives amid a leadership shakeup that put Brad Winderbaum in control of the comics division, with Midnight as one of his headline projects.
Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski compared the Midnight Universe to the New Universe and the Ultimate line when it was announced.
Neither of those launched into a market where the competition’s darker reimagining line had just taken Marvel’s crown.
The calendar and the model both say Absolute, right down to the event-scale rollout: the only Marvel books on sale October 7, Cloaked Covers concealing the art, and a structured Cover A–E variant program built for collectors.
The Midnight Universe launches October 7, with Marvel hosting a Midnight Hour panel at New York Comic Con that same week. All three #3 issues arrive December 16.
