Update: CBM says they heard back from Marvel and that Michael Waldron is not involved with Nova.
Nova might not be dead after all.
The Writers Guild of America directory lists Michael Waldron â the writer of Avengers: Doomsday and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the creator of Loki â as attached to Marvel’s Nova series.
Waldron’s Television Series Employment History in the WGA directory includes Nova for the 2026-2027 season, listed at one season with the genre classified as Drama.
The credit sits at the top of his history, right above Chad Powers, Loki, Heels, and Rick and Morty.
Michael Waldron wanted Glen Powell as Nova
The listing follows Waldron going on record last October saying he wanted to write Nova for Marvel and that he wanted Glen Powell to play Richard Rider.
Worth a mention is that Waldron and Powell already work together, as the pair co-created Chad Powers at Hulu, so a Waldron-Powell Nova wouldn’t exactly be coming out of nowhere.
Wasn’t Nova dead at Disney+?
What makes the WGA listing interesting is that Nova was thought to be dead, as it’s thought the project was deemed too expensive for the MCU’s new approach on Disney+, which favors cheaper, grounded content along the lines of Daredevil: Born Again and Wonder Man.
The thing about the budget argument is that Nova doesn’t have to open in deep space: Richard Rider starts off as a kid on Earth before joining the Nova Corps, becoming Nova Prime, and starring in Annihilation, so there is a version of the show that starts grounded and builds to the cosmic stuff.
Marvel Studios has been developing Nova since at least 2022, when Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel writer Sabir Pirzada was first attached to the project. She looks to no longer be attached to the project.
What about Ed Bernero and Henry Cavill?
Criminal Minds boss Ed Bernero was said to be on board as showrunner and head writer, which is still reflected on the project’s IMDb Pro page, where Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito are listed as producers and the series is marked as in pre-production.
However, the page hasn’t been updated since March of 2025, so the official status of Nova remains unknown, and it’s unclear whether Waldron replaced Bernero, is working alongside him, or did a pass on the scripts.
IMDb Pro also still lists Henry Cavill as “rumored” to play Nova, and the fan-contributed cast includes Glenn Close and John C. Reilly, who played Nova Prime and Rhomann Dey of the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy, but IMDb listings for unannounced projects are worth a grain of salt.
Timothée Chalamet was also once rumored for a Marvel role thought to be Nova.
