It took less than a day. NetEase revealed Storm’s Sacred Skies swimsuit costume for Marvel Rivals, watched the replies catch fire, and posted a full course correction before the dust settled on the skin’s launch.
The statement, posted in the early hours of August 13, commits to a free Legendary upgrade for the costume, a free Ultimate effect upgrade for anyone who buys it, and more Storm Legendary skins before the end of the year. It has already cleared 1.8 million views.
The Sacred Skies Problem
Sacred Skies arrived as part of the Season 9.5 Krakoa summer event alongside Scarlet Witch’s Seaside Sorceress and Magik’s Soul Surfer, the second major cosmetic drop of the half-season after the launch skins for Iron Fist, Moon Knight, and The Hood.
The comic homage was on point. The costume cites Marvel Swimsuit Special (1995) #4, with Storm promising clear skies over Krakoa while the X-Men take a beach day.
The tier was the problem. Sacred Skies was announced as an Epic at $16 with no Ultimate visual effects, hitting the store August 13 at 2 AM PT.
Why It Blew Up
The replies zeroed in fast. Storm is the only Black woman on the roster, and fans called Sacred Skies the first female summer skin to ship at Epic rather than Legendary.
It landed on top of a grievance that has been simmering all year. Luna Snow sits on six Legendary costumes plus three Epics and picked up yet another surprise skin in late July, while Storm mains have watched the premium pipeline flow everywhere but Ororo’s way.
By the time NetEase responded, the situation had moved past criticism. The company stated flatly that “harassment of our staff, including the development team and moderators, is not acceptable.”
The Three-Point Reversal
The plan is specific. Sacred Skies gets upgraded to Legendary for free with an all-new lobby animation and an updated MVP animation, and the price stays at $16.
Anyone who purchases the costume also receives a free Ultimate effect upgrade, which answers the missing Ult VFX complaint directly.
NetEase promised more Storm Legendary tier costumes over the rest of the year as well. The upgrades will take some time, per the statement, with the studio asking players for patience while the work gets done.
Now The Other Side Is Mad
The reversal opened a second front. Replies under the statement are telling NetEase it should have held the line, with one widely liked response warning that giving in teaches the loudest voices they can make the company bend.
That is the trap every live service publisher walks into. Reverse course and you confirm outrage works, hold firm and you wear the discourse for weeks.

What’s Next For Season 9.5
Per the Season 9.5 roadmap, the August 21 update brings Hellfire Gala costumes for Cyclops and Phoenix plus Daredevil’s Attorney at Law skin. That hands NetEase its next test almost immediately, since gala drops are exactly where tier assignments get scrutinized.
The half-season continues the Mystery of Thebes story that opened with vampire Jubilee’s debut and a patch that rewrote the game’s core systems.
Storm mains got their Legendary. NetEase got a reminder that a $16 tier assignment can turn into a 1.8 million view course correction overnight.
