The Mystery of Thebes reveal got the headlines, but the adjustment sheet NetEase dropped alongside it is the real earthquake.
Marvel Rivals Season 9 changes how health, ultimates, and team-ups work for every hero on the roster, live when servers return July 10.
Regenerative Shields Change How Tanks Die
Season 9 introduces a new health type called Regenerative Shields. They take damage exactly like base health, but avoid all damage for five seconds and the entire shield pool restores itself over the next five.
NetEase converted huge chunks of tank health into the new resource. Captain America goes from 600 base health to 300 plus a 300 Regenerative Shield, Thor makes the identical swap, and Hulk drops from 650 to 400 with 300 in shields. Venom converts to 500 plus 250, Rogue to 350 plus 225, and Angela to 350 plus 200.
The design intent is obvious: tanks who play cover and cooldowns reset to full, tanks who face-tank melt. Positioning just became the whole job.
The Team-Up System Gets Rebuilt
The Team-Up Anchor bonus health is gone for everyone, but the conversion wasn’t one-to-one across the roster. Some heroes got it folded into their new baseline numbers while others came out lighter than they went in, and the math on that is below.
In its place, NetEase is reintroducing Vanguard team-ups, revamping Strategist team-ups, and reimagining Duelist-focused ones, with a Hela and Namor pairing called Deep Wrath among the first shown.
The Gamma Charge team-up between Iron Man and Hulk also returns, and NetEase admits it shaved Iron Man’s baseline numbers because the pairing pushed him past acceptable power levels in playtests.
That’s the theme of the whole balance pass: some heroes who underperformed in Season 8.5 still ate nerfs because they synergized too hard with the new team-up system.
Every Ultimate Just Got Slower
Ultimate energy generation took a global hit. Vanguards and Duelists see damage-to-energy conversion drop from 70 to 55 percent, while Strategists get cut on both ends, with healing conversion down from 75 to 60 percent and damage conversion from 75 to 55.
In practice, ultimates arrive roughly a fifth slower across the board. Expect longer neutral fights and fewer of the ult-stacked team wipes that defined recent seasons.
Deadpool Is Now A Vanguard
The teased “hero rework” is Wade Wilson. The official adjustment sheet lists Deadpool – Vanguard among the tanks, complete with role-suffixed abilities: his Dual Desert Eagles get a Vanguard damage bump from 34 to 36 per shot, the upgraded Deadpool In Your Area now grants allies 25 percent damage reduction and Deadpool himself 35, and his base health climbs from 450 to 500.

The Early Winners And Losers
Groot’s jump from 700 to 850 base health looks like the biggest buff on the sheet, but read the fine print. He simultaneously loses his 150 Team-Up Anchor bonus, meaning his old maximum was already 850 whenever his team-up partner was on the roster. What actually changed is the condition. Groot now sits at 850 in every composition instead of only some of them, which makes this a consistency buff rather than free health.
The genuine winners are elsewhere. Devil Dinosaur takes the same anchor fold-in but stacks real buffs on top, with Prehistoric Plating’s crit reduction raised from 50 to 60 percent and the ultimate energy penalty on his attackers bumped to 40. Doctor Strange trades 25 points of anchored health for a Shield of the Seraphim that jumps from 700 to 850, hitting 1000 with Invisible Woman on the team. The Thing gives up nothing at all and gains a bigger StoneHaymaker cap plus a faster ultimate follow-up.
Then strengthen the losers paragraph so the anchor math cuts both ways (replace “On the losing end, Venom and Rogue give up real total health in the shield conversion, and Hulk pays 300 more energy for a harder-hitting Hulk Smash”):
The losing end is longer than it first looks once the anchor math is counted, and NetEase’s own sheet does the counting. Captain America’s conversion drops his total from 700 to 600, Hulk slides from 750 to 700 while paying 300 more energy for a harder-hitting Hulk Smash, and Venom falls from 825 to 750. Rogue gives up 75 total in her shield swap with no anchor involved, and Peni Parker simply loses her 50 anchor health with nothing coming back.
