Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed when fans can bring The Mandalorian and Grogu home, and the turnaround is fast.
The first live-action Star Wars movie in seven years arrives on digital platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home on Tuesday, July 21, with a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release to follow on August 25.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Home Release Dates
That digital drop lands just 60 days after the film opened in theaters on May 22. That’s a fast premium video-on-demand window by any measure, arriving barely two months after a theatrical debut Disney would rather not dwell on.
The physical 4K and Blu-ray release follows 95 days out from opening weekend. A Disney+ streaming date has not yet been announced and is expected to follow in the coming months.
A Record-Low Star Wars Box Office
Here’s the context Lucasfilm’s announcement leaves out: The Mandalorian and Grogu is the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie ever made.
The Jon Favreau-directed film finished its theatrical run with $177.7 million domestically and $167.4 million internationally for a worldwide total of $345.2 million. That’s against a reported $165 million production budget, with a marketing-inclusive spend reported as high as $300 million.
The warning signs were there from the jump. Mando opened to $81.67 million over its three-day domestic frame and roughly $98 million across the four-day Memorial Day holiday.
That was the softest domestic launch for any Disney-era Star Wars film, landing under 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, the previous franchise low. A second-weekend collapse of around 70 percent confirmed the film as a theatrical disappointment well before its run wound down.
A 60-day sprint to digital is no coincidence. When a would-be tentpole underperforms this badly, the priority shifts fast from theatrical legs to home-video recoupment, and Disney is wasting no time getting Grogu in front of the fans who skipped the multiplex.
Disney has since said it out loud, as CEO Josh D’Amaro admitted the film underperformed the studio’s box office expectations, while touting toy sales and theme park traffic instead.

For those buying in, both the digital and physical releases come loaded with bonus material. Confirmed featurettes include Crafting The Mandalorian and Grogu, a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s puppetry, miniatures, sound design, and visual effects, alongside Biomes: From Snow to Swamp, Welcome to Shakari, and Dejarik for Real, plus a full audio commentary track from Favreau.
Collectors get a SteelBook edition and a U.S.-exclusive Beskar Collector’s Edition featuring special packaging and metal posters.
The bigger question is what this box office result means for the road ahead. Lucasfilm’s next theatrical swing, Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling, races into theaters in May 2027, and it will need to prove the franchise can still fill seats in a way The Mandalorian and Grogu could not.
