We finally(?) find out the real reason why the iconic look of Henry Cavill’s Superman costume has been changed in the new Man of Steel movie.
Zack Snyder and co. went with a Superman minus the iconic look of the red trunks.
At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, Man of Steel costume illustrator Phillip Boutte explains exactly why.
They dropped the red trunks to make Superman look more alien, and updated the look with a more sleeker version, but still recognizable as the Superman we all know.
“We went back and forth with trying to figure out if he should have them or if he shouldn’t,” Boutte told MovieBytes. “And the biggest factor was that in this world – which I think I can say – Superman’s an alien, he comes from a different planet, so we thought that the underwear made him kind of feel like he was from here.”
Boutte also says the design wasn’t based on the look of the DC Comics reboot, which also has no red trunks.
“No. Warren Manser worked really hard with Michael Wilkinson on coming up with the actual design of Superman’s suit, and trying to make sure that it was alien enough, but still somewhat reminiscent of what it is,” Boutte said.
Boutte also hints that the reason for certain detailing on the Superman costume “comes from his world,” — some of which was already been made know by costume designer Michael Wilkinson back in March.
And Boutte says we are going to see Kryptonians, “definitely unlike anything you have seen before,” and “the other Supermans really don’t play into how we approached this one.”
Boutte’s favorite of all the costumes?
He says he is a big fan of the new Superman, but the “villains are amazing.”

Regarding the Man of Steel movie not affecting the comic books or vice versa, I’m not sure I buy that, as former Superman writer, George Perez, recently let it be known that the Man of Steel execs were interfering with the Superman comic book, which led to his departure.
