James Gunn Downplays Man of Tomorrow Secret Characters: ‘About Lex and Clark’

UPDATE, October 5: Now Gunn has posted his private texts with Frank Grillo over a fan poster picturing Arjona as Wonder Woman. In the texts, Gunn calls it “beneficial to us.”

CBN insiders said back on June 28 that Adria Arjona is playing Wonder Woman in Man of Tomorrow, not Maxima, the role she was announced under.

In August, the same sources added that it’s more of a cameo than a full role.

Keep that in mind while reading what James Gunn told fans Monday night.

The DC Studios boss spent the evening answering questions on Threads, and one exchange stands out.

‘What Secret Characters?’

A fan asked Gunn: “Are you going to start revealing the secret characters from the Superman movie after the Green Lantern series ends?”

Gunn replied: “What secret characters? It’s movie about Lex and Clark. People shouldn’t expect substantial amounts of other characters.”

That answer covers a movie whose announced cast already includes Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific.

Blue Beetle is in it, too. Confirmed back in July: Xolo Maridueña is suiting up again as Jaime Reyes, and the actor just talked about it a couple of weeks ago.

And then there’s Arjona. She was announced as Maxima, DC has never confirmed the role, and the actress has declined to name the character in interviews.

A Cameo Isn’t A ‘Substantial Amount’

Look at what Gunn didn’t say.

He didn’t say there are no other characters in the movie.

He said fans shouldn’t expect “substantial amounts” of them.

That matches what CBN’s sources have said about Man of Tomorrow and Arjona all summer: it’s Gunn’s last hurrah full of cameos, and she’s Wonder Woman, and the part is a cameo.

She filmed her scenes in the final weeks before the movie wrapped on Aug. 26.

A cameo is not a substantial amount of a character.

Gunn also told fans Monday exactly how he handles reveals.

Asked about the new Superman suit, he wrote, “If I could just drop it in theaters without showing anything I would.”

Asked about a Brainiac first look, he said it again: “Again, I’d rather show people nothing and have people see everything in theaters. But unfortunately we can’t entirely do it that way.”

He said it twice in the same Q&A: he wants fans seeing everything for the first time in theaters.

CBN’s sources say what’s waiting there: Wonder Woman, played by Adria Arjona, in a role sized exactly the way Gunn just described it.

Gunn also again shot down claims Grant Gustin is joining the DCU.

Man of Tomorrow opens July 9, 2027.
