Blade with Mahershala Ali is dead, and this time it’s the star saying it out loud.
In a GQ interview published Friday morning, Ali was asked directly whether Blade is any closer to becoming a reality. His answer: “Not with me.”
The two-time Oscar winner then made it clear exactly where he thinks the blame belongs:
“For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on. Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.”
Ali added that after nearly 30 years in the business, he has learned “what is for you is for you and what is not is not,” and that he would rather build his career on original work than remakes.
The Timing Says Everything
This lands eleven days after Kevin Feige told Josh Horowitz he feels like a “gigantic loser and failure” over never getting Blade off the ground with Ali.
Feige framed it as a therapy joke. Ali is clearly not laughing along.
Read his words again. Marvel had him under contract. Marvel has billions of dollars. Marvel chose not to make the movie. That is not shared failure, that is a decision, and Ali just pinned it on the studio publicly and permanently.
It also comes less than a week after Marvel ran the exact same play in the exact same room.
On Saturday at Comic-Con, Ryan Gosling got his Hall H coronation as Ghost Rider, an actor-driven passion project with Feige deferring creative control to his star.
As we spelled out Sunday, Gosling’s Ghost Rider is running the Blade playbook beat for beat: the A-lister walks in with a passion pitch, gets the Hall H moment, and Marvel bets everything on the star as the development plan.
Ali making his exit official the same week Marvel anointed its next actor-author project is the punctuation mark on that warning.
The Blade Director And The Blade Star Made Their Movie Anyway
Here is the detail that should sting Marvel the most.
The GQ interview is tied to Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the September 25 release that Ali wrote and stars in, directed by Bassam Tariq.
That would be the same Bassam Tariq who was Marvel’s original Blade director before exiting the project in 2022.
Ali says he poured more than a year of Blade stunt and sword training into the film and feels “creatively redeemed on some level.”
So the Blade director and the Blade star went off and made their movie together after all. It just isn’t Blade, and Marvel isn’t part of it.

As for the Daywalker, Wesley Snipes returned in Deadpool & Wolverine and stole the show, and Blade has been rumored for Avengers: Secret Wars.
After today, if Blade shows up in Doomsday or Secret Wars, it won’t be Mahershala Ali. He told you himself: not with him.
Marvel has not commented on Ali’s remarks. As the man said, those questions are for them now.
