The Lobo solo movie may be sitting in limbo, but DC keeps finding work for the Main Man.
It fits the pattern of James Gunn keeping the character in play, following reports that Momoa is rumored for a role in Man of Tomorrow.
Lobo is set to appear in Starfire!, the upcoming animated series from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, per details revealed at last month’s Annecy Animation Festival and reported by Nexus Point News.
The news is making the rounds again this week, with scooper MyTimeToShineHello summing up the situation in four words: “James Gunn putting him everywhere.”
What Was Revealed At Annecy
Per Nexus Point News’ rundown of the panel, Starfire! follows the Tamaranean princess as the leader of a team of alien girls made up of Crush, Fern, and Amethyst, with the series set in the Vega Galaxy.
Hynden Walch is returning to voice Starfire, the role she has held since the 2003 Teen Titans series, and a clip of Starfire fighting her sister Blackfire screened for the Annecy crowd.
Then comes the kicker: Lobo, Gotham City, and Thanagarians will all be making an appearance. The show is described as an 11-minute kids series, with big title cards introducing new locations and characters in the style of The Suicide Squad, and Puffy AmiYumi returning to perform the theme song.
The Lobo appearance has built-in logic. Crush, one of Starfire’s crew, is Lobo’s teenage daughter in the comics, so dad turning up was always on the table.
Worth noting: the series is its own continuity outside the DCU proper, one of the younger-skewing shows Warner Bros. Animation is producing with DC Studios alongside My Adventures with Green Lantern and DC Super Powers, with Josie Campbell executive producing.
There is also no word yet on whether Jason Momoa voices the character. We got our first look at the show when the studios previewed their animation slate ahead of Annecy.
Everywhere Except The One Place Momoa Asked For
Lobo is the one asset DC salvaged from the Supergirl wreck, and the studio knows it.
Warner Bros. expanded Momoa’s role after he wowed executives, with a Lobo scene added to the theatrical cut just like we first reported. He came out as the highlight of the film in our review despite only around 10 minutes of screen time.
James Gunn personally curated the character’s metal playlist for the film’s Spotify push. And when the movie bombed, Warner Bros. leaned in harder, making Lobo the face of Supergirl‘s digital release.
But the one project Momoa actually asked for is the one that stalled. He tied a solo movie to Supergirl doing well, and the fans didn’t show.
So the Main Man’s next confirmed gig is a non-canon kids cartoon built around his daughter, where another actor may end up doing the voice. That is the current state of Lobo at DC: too good to shelve, too radioactive to greenlight.
