UPDATE 10/5: It happened again. Collider is claiming Lindelof confirmed Season 2 is in early development. He didn’t. And Mundy has now said it flat out: “there’s nothing official.”
UPDATE 10/4: The season finale has aired, and showrunner Chris Mundy reveals details on where Season 2 would go. There’s still no order.
UPDATE 10/2: Three straight weeks of Nielsen growth are now on the board, and HBO still hasn’t ordered more.
UPDATE 10/1: The numbers don’t help the Season 2 case. Lanterns is averaging way below The Penguin, which never got a second season.
James Gunn confirmed the October 4 Lanterns finale is a season finale, not a series finale, and DCU fans are treating two words as a renewal announcement.
Under Gunn’s “I’ve seen Lanterns 500 times” post on Threads, a fan asked, “SEASON finale, correct?”
“Season finale, correct,” Gunn replied.
That was all it took.

‘Hell Yeah Series Finale Is Yet To Come’
Gunn’s two-word reply sits at more than 600 likes, and the responses under it turned into a renewal party.
“Did you just confirmed Lanterns getting season 2?” one fan asked.
“does that mean we getting a season 2 sir?” wrote another.
“Hell yeah series finale is yet to come,” a third added.
Gunn answered the finale question. He has not answered any of the Season 2 questions.
One reply in the thread got it right: “I’m sure James knows already, but as far as we know, they’re doing the Season 2 writers room at the moment but there is no official renewal yet.”
That matches the reporting.
The Ankler says a renewal is “not imminent,” with co-showrunners Chris Mundy and Chris Cantwell putting together pitch pages HBO will use to decide on an order.

HBO’s Boss Already Answered The Question
“Season finale” is accurate either way. A final season gets a season finale too.
The question is whether HBO has ordered more, and the man who makes that call went on the record two weeks ago.
Asked by Deadline whether anything else is active in development at DC, HBO boss Casey Bloys said, “No, not right now, obviously you’ve got Gorilla Grodd.”
The only DC show he pointed to is The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a 30-minute, eight-episode comedy. A Lanterns Season 2 never came up.
Bloys also told Deadline to “focus on what we’re greenlighting” over development chatter, and he left Lanterns off the list of shows HBO is bringing to next year’s Emmys, a window every Season 1 episode qualifies for.
Lanterns co-creator Damon Lindelof himself said Season 2 happens “if it’s successful.” He and co-creator Tom King have both since moved on from DC.
Gunn confirmed October 4 is a season finale. Nobody at HBO has confirmed there is a season after it.
