A new Lanterns plot leak claims Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan is killed off at the end of the very first episode and that the Manhunters are the threat the Green Lanterns are hunting, which is exactly where we said this show was heading months ago.
The timing is no accident, either.
The leak lands two weeks before Lanterns takes over Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, just over a month out from the August 16 premiere, and right as the first press reactions to the series arrive — and those are looking good (more on that below).
The Leak: Manhunters And A Dead Hal Jordan
The post went up on Reddit’s LeaksAndRumors sub and blew up fast, pulling in close to 200 comments within a few hours. Consider the details rumor for now, but here is what it claims:
- The series runs across two timelines: 2016 and 2026.
- The main plot follows the Lanterns searching for the Manhunters.
- Hal Jordan is killed at the end of Episode 1.
That first detail already checks out. Showrunner Chris Mundy confirmed the 2016 and 2026 timelines to EW back in May, so whoever posted this is at minimum up to speed on the show’s actual structure. The other two claims are the news, and they line up with everything else we know.
We Said Hal Jordan Dies Back In March
Longtime readers know this isn’t coming out of nowhere. While at WonderCon at the end of March, we posted it flat out:
That followed our breakdown of the Lanterns footage earlier that month, where the older cars, the rural setting, and Hal’s line about being the only human Green Lantern all pointed to part of the show being set in the past, and to the bigger conclusion: Hal Jordan may already be dead or gone by the time the present-day DCU catches up.
Everything since has stacked up in the same direction.
Mundy confirmed the story opens with a 2016 shooting in Rushville, Nebraska, before jumping ten years ahead, and he has described Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart as the backup Lantern in case something happens to Hal: “the old guard and the heir apparent.”
He also said the series is “in a lot of ways about replacement” in regard to when someone should step aside and when the next person takes over.
Add in that Pierre is confirmed for James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow while Chandler is not, and a premiere-ending death for Hal stops looking like a shock twist and starts looking like the plan.
Worth spelling out: killing Hal at the end of Episode 1 doesn’t bench Kyle Chandler.
The dual timelines let the show keep playing out Hal’s story in the earlier timeline while the later one deals with what his death leaves behind. It also recontextualizes the whole mystery, this was never just about who shot up Rushville. It’s about what happened to Hal Jordan.
Who Are The Manhunters?
For those who don’t know the comics: the Manhunters are androids built by the Guardians of the Universe as their first attempt at policing the cosmos, long before the Green Lantern Corps existed.
They eventually turned on their creators, were stripped of their power, and the Guardians replaced them with living ring-bearers, the Corps. Their calling card: “No man escapes the Manhunters.”
They’re a perfect fit for this show. Androids hiding among ordinary humans is pulled straight from the comics. DC’s Millennium event revealed Manhunter sleeper agents embedded across Earth, some posing as people the heroes knew and that premise slots right into a paranoid small-town Nebraska mystery.
It would explain why Hal insists the Rushville shooting has alien ties when the local sheriff sees nothing extraterrestrial about it.
And it matches what insiders told us months ago: the season starts grounded and goes cosmic later. A Manhunter reveal is exactly the kind of turn that takes a heartland murder case into full Green Lantern lore.
Press Reactions Are In — And They Match What We Heard
Meanwhile, the first word on the show itself is out.
Per insider Jeff Sneider (relayed by A Geek’s Viewpoint on X), press reactions to the first four episodes are “highly encouraging,” with a solid and favorable overall consensus. The most negative response so far still lands the series at just okay.
That’s a big deal following the trailer backlash from earlier this year, and it lines up with what we’ve been reporting for a year.
Back at Comic-Con 2025, a Warner Bros. insider told us Lanterns is “really good”. That it is grounded at the start before leaning heavily into sci-fi. And just last month, we noted we were hearing the same thing again: Lanterns is good, actually.
All Eyes On Hall H
All of this arrives ahead of the Lanterns Hall H panel on Friday, July 24, where Chandler, Pierre, Garret Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan will be joined by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with HBO Max promising never-before-seen footage.
