After more than two decades of rumors, a Kingdom Hearts show is finally happening.
Disney officially announced Kingdom Hearts: The Series at Friday night’s D23 Entertainment Showcase, an original anime series headed to Disney Channel and Disney+.
The reveal came with key art showing a Keyblade-wielding hero rendered in full anime style, with the series simply billed as coming soon.
Disney describes the show as an original anime series inspired by the beloved video game franchise.
A Long Time Coming
Kingdom Hearts debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2002 as the unlikely crossover between Square Enix and Disney, dropping Final Fantasy-style heroes into Disney worlds.
The franchise has since sold over 38 million copies, and Disney just recently confirmed it ranks among only nine of its game franchises to gross over $1 billion at retail.
A TV adaptation has been kicked around nearly as long as the games have existed, including an unaired animated pilot from the early 2000s that surfaced online a few years back and Disney+ series rumors dating back to 2020.
More Kingdom Hearts News Coming Saturday
The timing here is no accident. Disney is hosting a dedicated Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts panel at D23 on Saturday at 4:30 pm PT, streaming live on Disney’s YouTube channel as the franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Sora voice actor Haley Joel Osment and Riku’s David Gallagher are set to appear, and with Kingdom Hearts 4 now locked for late 2027 with a Coco world in tow, expect a much deeper look at the game there as well.
Kingdom Hearts: The Series does not yet have a premiere date.
