Kevin Feige handed Yelena Belova fans two headlines in one sentence.
Speaking on stage at BilibiliWorld in Shanghai, the Marvel Studios boss said Florence Pugh’s Yelena has a “big part” in Avengers: Doomsday — and that you may not have to wait until December to see her.
“If you’re a fan of Yelena, wait until Avengers: Doomsday. Yelena plays a big part in that,” Feige said. “But if you don’t want to wait until then, you might see Yelena a little bit sooner in the movies.”
‘Sooner’ Means July 31
The math here is not complicated.
There is exactly one Marvel Studios movie between now and Doomsday: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, in theaters July 31, three weeks from the day Feige said it.
Feige does not free-associate on stage. When the man who signs off on every spoiler embargo points a spotlight at “sooner in the movies” this close to a Spider-Man release, that’s marketing, not a slip.
Florence Pugh was first rumored back in August of last year to be joining Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
A ‘Big Part’ In Doomsday
The Doomsday half of the quote tracks with everything Marvel showed in Shanghai.
Yelena fronts the New Avengers that new group art unveiled at the event, standing alongside the rest of the Thunderbolts roster in the mural Marvel put up on the show floor.
Coming off carrying Thunderbolts — rebranded The New Avengers — Pugh has spent the past year positioned as the connective tissue of this Avengers era. “Big part” is Feige saying the quiet part on stage.
