Kevin Feige finally put the X-Men reboot on the calendar.
Speaking on stage at BilibiliWorld in Shanghai, the Marvel Studios boss confirmed that Jake Schreier’s X-Men movie lands after Avengers: Secret Wars.
“I can’t wait for all of you to see Avengers: Doomsday. We have a movie after that called Avengers: Secret Wars, and after that the mutants are coming and the X-Men are coming, and that’s been a dream of mine,” Feige said. “I started with the X-Men many, many years ago, and to bring a new version into the MCU is going to be very exciting.”
Do the math. Secret Wars opens December 17, 2027, which makes Schreier’s X-Men a 2028 movie at the earliest, and this is the first time Feige has publicly nailed down the order of operations.
‘The X-Men Are Coming Up Very, Very Soon’
Feige doubled down when the topic turned to Marvel’s female characters.
“Well, Marvel is 90 years old, there are so many great female characters, and some of my favorite female characters are in a group called the X-Men, and the X-Men are coming up very, very soon,” he said.
That line lands the same week the film’s writer made the “X-Men are for everybody” rounds, so expect the fight over what the franchise “really means” to get louder from here.
The Mutants Don’t Wait Until 2028
Before Schreier’s reboot, the Fox wave hits first.
Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and the returning X-Men actors are all over Doomsday, the X-Mansion is literally built on the BilibiliWorld show floor, and Cyclops stands dead center in the new group art Marvel unveiled at the event.
Feige framed the mash-up as the whole point:
“We have a thing at Marvel called Strange Alchemy — putting these characters together that should never really be together,” he said. “That’s what Marvel’s all about, it’s assembling heroes that might not get along and forcing them to do what’s best for the world. Seeing the X-Men, and the Avengers, and the New Avengers, and the Fantastic Four together is a dream I never thought would come true.”
Feige’s first Marvel job was on Fox’s X-Men back in 2000, and Disney has been sitting on the film rights since the Fox deal closed in 2019. Seven years of teases later, there’s finally a sequence: Doomsday, Secret Wars, mutants.
