Marvel is disappearing from theaters for a year, and Kevin Feige’s explanation only tells part of the story.
Speaking to Empire after Marvel’s Hall H panel, Feige confirmed there will be no MCU movie between Avengers: Doomsday, opening December 18, and Avengers: Secret Wars, arriving December 17, 2027.
Once Doomsday lands, Marvel’s theatrical slate goes silent for 12 straight months. That follows the MCU’s 17-month dark period after Fantastic Four, not counting Spider-Man or the September Endgame re-release.
Feige Blames Marvel’s Volume
Feige framed the gap as a quality-first strategy Marvel has discussed for years, then gave the reason behind it: “when quantity is so much, you get spread thin.”
He said Marvel did not want that happening around the Avengers movies. He also described Secret Wars as a launchpad for the MCU’s next era and said the studio is using both films to build toward 2028.
So far, Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3 are the first two titles revealed for that post-Avengers slate.
“Spread Thin” Is The Excuse
Calling Marvel “spread thin” blames the workload instead of the work.
It assumes the talent was there, the ideas were there, the execution was fine, and Marvel simply had too many plates spinning.
It is the most forgiving possible explanation for what happened to the MCU, which is exactly why it is the explanation being offered.
That is not what went wrong.
Audiences did not walk away because Marvel put too many movies on the calendar. They walked away because they watched Quantumania, The Marvels, Love and Thunder, and Eternals and came out unhappy.
Those movies were not bad because the release schedule was crowded. They were bad on their own terms, with their own scripts, their own edits, and their own creative choices.
The proof is sitting on Marvel’s own books right now.
Doomsday cleared $16.5 million in day-one ticket sales, the trailer hit 500 million views in 24 hours, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is tracking for the biggest opening of 2026.
Nobody is fatigued. The appetite never left. It comes roaring back the moment the product looks good.

Quality Was Always The Problem
Feige keeps circling the real answer without saying it outright.
He leads with quality. He says Marvel has always tried to focus on it. He says the new strategy is built around it. He says quality is the reason for the gap.
Then he ties the problem to volume, as though the only thing standing between Marvel and good movies was a lighter calendar.
Quality is the variable. Quantity is the alibi.
Cutting the slate does not fix a broken creative pipeline. It only reduces how many times a year Marvel has to find out in public whether that pipeline works.
This also fits a recent run of Feige candor that keeps landing beside the truth without fully touching it.
He admitted Doomsday moved to December because the movie couldn’t be finished in time, and he called himself a “gigantic loser” over how Blade fell apart.
Blade was not a scheduling casualty either. It was a movie Marvel could never crack creatively, through director after director, and no amount of open calendar space saved it.
Marvel Is Retreating For A Year
Put the calendar together and the retreat is starker than Feige makes it sound.
Brand New Day opens Friday. Doomsday closes out 2026. Then all of 2027 contains exactly one MCU theatrical release, arriving in the final month of the year.
Streaming continues, with VisionQuest hitting Disney+ on October 14, but the movie machine that once tried to own every season is voluntarily going dark.
Clearing the runway for two Avengers movies and an X-Men-led relaunch after Secret Wars is still the right call.
Marvel is leaving a year of box office on the table to protect those movies, which tells you exactly how much is riding on both.
But an empty calendar means nothing if what comes out of it is not good. Fewer swings do not guarantee better ones.
If Doomsday and Secret Wars land, nobody will care about the year Marvel disappeared.
If they do not, Marvel will have spent twelve months in silence only to arrive at the same problem it has had since Endgame.
And this time, there will not be a crowded schedule left to blame.
