Kathleen Kennedy Further Confirms Spinoffs Are Origins? Characters Not Featured In Episodes VII, VIII, IX

Some new Star Wars news surfaces out of the recent LucasFilm Singapore Sandcrawler HQ unveiling in regards to the spinoff movies and the upcoming episodes (VII, VIII, IX).

Kathleen Kennedy, president of LucasFilm, offered the following in regards to Star Wars canon (via SlashFilm and ToyrsREvil):

George was so clear as to how that works. The canon that he created was the Star Wars saga. Right now, episode seven falls within that canon. The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that he created,” she says.

“There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes. Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it’s a roadmap that George made pretty clear,” she adds.

So what is Kennedy actually stating?

Well, at this point that seems to be anybody’s guess.

She seems to be stating that the Star Wars spinoff characters won’t mingle or interact with the Episodes, right?

Now that could mean the spinoffs may feature younger versions of the characters, as without time travel, they wouldn’t appear in the later Episodes (hence fitting her argument that the standalone spinoff characters won’t be carried in and out of the saga episodes – as they are set in different time periods).

She could also be stating that the spinoffs will not be considered canon. If I have my facts straight, George Lucas only considers Episodes 1-6 canon. All the books, comics, games etc. are not canon, but would be considered a part of the general “Star Wars” universe. Or as Kennedy perhaps puts it: “vast universe.” This seems unlikely and a bit ridiculous as having a major motion picture essentially not “technically” being a part of Star Wars would be pointless, at least in my opinion. 

I’m guessing she is slyly stating the movies are going to be set in different time periods, because if we literally read into the above (assuming it’s correct), she is stating if one of the spinoff movie characters gets super popular, the character has no chance of appearing in an Episode. I can’t see that happening. 

Sounds to me like she is confirming the spinoff movies are origins just as a Disney chief financial officer did back in September.

Rumored spinoff movies include Boba Fett, Han Solo and Yoda.
