Sony is developing a live-action adaptation of Kaiju No. 8, according to scooper Daniel Richtman.
Richtman posted the claim to his Patreon on Friday:
“Sony is developing a live-action adaptation of Kaiju No. 8, based on the popular manga and anime series created by Naoya Matsumoto.”
The report doesn’t say whether the project is a movie or a series, and no writers or producers are named.
Sony has not confirmed the project, so file this one under rumor for now.

Kaiju No. 8 Wrapped Its Manga Last Year
Kaiju No. 8 launched on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ platform in July 2020 and became one of the digital imprint’s biggest hits.
The story follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old stuck cleaning up monster guts for a living, who gains the power to turn into a kaiju himself and finally joins Japan’s anti-kaiju Defense Force.
Matsumoto ended the manga in July 2025 after 129 chapters and 16 volumes, with more than 19 million copies in circulation.
The Anime Ends With Season 3 On Crunchyroll
Production I.G’s anime adaptation premiered in 2024, and a second season aired last year.
Season 3, officially billed as the Final Chapter, was announced at Jump Festa in December and will adapt the manga’s ending. It doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
The anime streams on Crunchyroll, which Sony owns. A live-action version would keep the franchise in the family after the anime wraps.
Sony Is Betting Big On Anime
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures released Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle in September 2025. The movie opened to $70 million domestic, the biggest anime opening ever, and went on to become the highest-grossing anime film of all time.
Sony also has a live-action One Punch Man movie in development, with Justin Lin attached to direct and Rick and Morty‘s Dan Harmon on the script.
A live-action Kaiju No. 8 fits right in.
The timing lines up, too. Sony’s top bosses, including Sony Group CEO Hiroki Totoki and Sony Pictures boss Ravi Ahuja, headline Crunchyroll’s first Anime Future Forum on October 7 in New York, the day before New York Comic Con.
Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini closes that event with what the company describes as news. If Sony wants to make this one official, there’s a stage waiting next week.
Richtman Called Jon Watts For Star Wars
Richtman keeps hitting.
He was first to say Jon Watts is directing the first movie in Simon Kinberg’s new Star Wars trilogy, which Deadline confirmed the same day.
He also leaked the full plot of Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs, with Scarlett Johansson facing John Leguizamo’s satanic serial killer.
And this week he revealed Disney’s Lilo & Stitch 2 is casting a brand new lead character named Nellie.
