Joss Whedon Won’t Do The Avengers 2 Without Robert Downey Jr.; More Female Superheroes

We get a small update on the casting for The Avengers 2 from Joss Whedon in that the director states he won’t do the movie without the involvement of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.

Recently it came out that there may be casting issues with future Marvel Studios movies as it’s rumored Disney doesn’t want to shell out anymore cash, with the actors seemingly ticked off that they are getting the bottom of the barrel.

It’s been said that Robert Downey Jr., who gets around $50-60 million a movie due to signing bonuses and incentives, is fighting for his fellow cast members, and as he does get so much money that is making Disney all the angrier.

Now The Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon adds a little more fuel to the fire as he is supporting Robert Downey Jr., who is not signed on for The Avengers 2, which would in turn be supporting the rest of the cast.

Whedon tells the Daily Beast the following:

He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that. I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine. But I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things. You have to be ready for the unexpected. But I loved working with Robert, and everybody knows he embodied that role in a way no one else can. The day he was cast, I went up to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige and said, “You brilliant son of a bitch.”

Whedon also touches upon the lack of female superheroes and notes that hopefully due to The Hunger Games we’ll see more, mentioning that possibly he could be the one to do it.

And back to the female-hero thing, I’m not going to let nobody do it. It doesn’t have to be me, but it could be.

The Avengers 2 assembles May 1, 2015 with Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie on August 1, 2014 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015..
