J.J. Abrams rebooted Star Trek in 2009 quite successfully with a brand new universe, but at the same time also managed to tie-in to the previous Star Trek universe with an appearance by Leonard Nimoy.
We’ve heard countless times about the newest film, Star Trek Into Darkness, that none of the original characters will appear.
Well, what about the characters that came after?
Jonathan Frakes played William Riker, the popular “Number One” to Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard, for seven seasons — and Frakes is hopeful that a member of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast will get a chance to appear in the new J.J. Abrams universe.
He tells NBC Philadelphia (Via TrekNews) the following:
I am very hopeful. I’m not sure where we would be – I happen to be a fan and a friend of J.J.’s and I think he’s rebooted the franchise in the most successful and wonderful way imaginable. And I’m really excited about the second movie. I think maybe some version of what they did with Leonard Nimoy in the first movie would be the way to go: they would pepper in one of us. I would imagine they’d start with Picard if they could. It would involve our usual time travel/quantum anomaly/black hole/some sci‑fi version of how we all get there.
Could one of TNG characters being appearing somehow along side Chris Pine this time around? If Benedict Cumberbatch is, indeed, the all-powerful Gary Mitchell, it’s quite possible.
Star Trek Into Darkness has a May 17th, 2013 release date in 3D, is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu and Benedict Cumberbatch as an unnamed villain.
