J.J. Abrams recently described Bendedict Cumberbatch as a “frightening and cool villain” in Star Trek Into Darkness.
With the release of the trailers as well as a new image still revealing Cumberbatch to be the character of John Harrison that hasn’t stopped fans speculation — only increased it.
John Harrison could be a reference to the original Star Trek television series supporting character, Harrison, that was involved with the Khan episode, “Space Seed.”
Now we get add more to the enigma that is John Harrison as Benedict Cumberbatch spoke with MTV offering some new clues, describing the character as a “terrorist” along with adding he has extraordinary physical and mental powers.
“He’s a terrorist; he operates as a terrorist. He has extraordinary physical powers, but also mental powers,” Cumberbatch reveals to MTV. “He can sow an idea, which is as powerful as gunshots or close-hand combat, which he’s masterful in. He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation. It’s quite exciting to watch.”
Cumberbatch goes on to say that the motivations of John Harrison are not only personal, but political as well as that he is somebody that the audience may be able to sympathize with as he is not a “cookie-cutter” villain.
“Giving away the full motivation would ruin it, but it’s personal. It’s also political, I think. He’s somebody who, at some point in the film, you should feel a certain amount of empathy towards his cause, if not his means. … There’s no two-dimensional obstacle he presents purely and simply by the fact that he’s opposing our hero.”
