Earlier, Kathleen Kennedy who is overseeing Star Wars for Disney said that a big announcement regarding the new movies would be coming this month, and now we know what it is as Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams has just been announced to direct Episode VII.
Though Abrams previously said he wasn’t interested, according to The Wrap Kennedy was courting the director for a long time.
It’s also said that Argo director Ben Affleck was a contender for Star Wars Episode VII as well.
As Abrams has been busy working on the new Star Trek film it’s noted that J.J. Abrams will have to move rather quickly on to Star Wars as Disney wants it released in 2015.
As of now, no plot related elements are known, but the script is from Michael Ardnt.
Previous rumors mention the movie may be centered on a female Jedi, perhaps the daughter of Luke Skywalker.
It’s also been previously stated that the movie will feature the three returning characters from the originals with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford.
