At the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-Ray release party, J.J. Abrams talked a bit about Star Trek 3 offering they are working on the story.

Abrams doesn’t offer much, but does state Star Trek 3 will continue from where Into Darkness left off with the start of its five year mission, perhaps hinting that the next movie will be more akin to what fan’s expect.

“This film ends with the beginning of this five year mission so it makes sense that we sort of be following some aspect of that,” Abrams told HitFix. “It’s too early to talk about any of the details, but I will say there have been a lot of exciting ideas discussed about what comes next.”

The beginning of the five year mission suggests space travel and exploration as the original series went that route, with some having a problem with Star Trek Into Darkness being set on Earth.

When pressed about a director being attached to Star Trek 3, Abrams says there is none, and when the rumor of Ruper Wyatt directing is brought up, Abrams has only good things to say about the director.

It’s thought that J.J. Abrams will not be directing Star Trek 3 due to being committed to Star Wars, but Abrams says he plans to be involved in the film in some capacity.

“I plan to be involved in the story and producing the film and I feel very blessed to be involved at all,” he said.
