Jennifer Holland Says Man Of Tomorrow Might Be James Gunn’s Best Movie — Of Course

Jennifer Holland is back talking up James Gunn’s DCU, and this time the praise is not for the Peacemaker Season 2 rewrite that lost viewers.

It’s for Man of Tomorrow.

Speaking with GamesRadar+ at a Supergirl screening, Holland said she has already seen an “enormous, enormous portion” of Gunn’s next Superman movie and suggested it “might be James’s best.”

Of course she did.

Jennifer Holland Says Man Of Tomorrow Is A Step Up

Holland, who plays Emilia Harcourt in Gunn’s DCU and is married to Gunn, told the outlet she is excited for Man of Tomorrow, even though the movie is not finished filming.

She called the film “different,” said it could be Gunn’s best movie, and described it as a “step up” in a lot of ways.

That is the quote DC Studios wants out there. Man of Tomorrow is not just another sequel. It is Gunn’s follow-up to Superman, the movie now carrying the weight of his entire DCU after Supergirl collapsed at the box office and Peacemaker Season 2 failed to hold its audience.

For more on the movie itself, we’ve got the full breakdown of Man of Tomorrow, including the release date, cast, Brainiac, Lex Luthor’s Warsuit, and the Superman/Lex team-up.

The Timing Is The Story

The quote lands right after Holland also revealed that her notes caused Gunn to scrap his original Peacemaker Season 2 scripts and start over.

As we covered, Holland said she read an earlier version of Peacemaker Season 2, gave Gunn feedback, and he “ended up scrapping that and just started over new.”

The version that made it to the screen was the one Holland praised as being grounded in relationships. The audience did not agree.

The Peacemaker Season 2 finale drew just 435k households over its first four days per Samba TV, 150k fewer than the Season 1 finale, and the season dropped roughly 39% from premiere to finale. None of the Season 2 episodes cracked the weekly Nielsen streaming charts during release, and Gunn has already confirmed there won’t be a Season 3.

So now Holland is praising the next big Gunn project, and the context matters. This is not coming from some random critic or outside filmmaker. This is coming from inside the same creative bubble that has been defending the DCU while the numbers keep moving in the other direction.

Man Of Tomorrow Is Now Gunn’s Last Best Hope

Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Lars Eidinger as Brainiac. Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is also expected to be part of the film after launching in her own movie.

That makes Holland’s praise more than normal spouse support or co-star hype. Man of Tomorrow is the next major test for Gunn’s DCU after Supergirl opened to $37.1 million domestic and roughly $62.6 million worldwide, numbers that immediately turned the movie into another DC problem instead of a win.

As we recently argued, Gunn has lost a massive chunk of the DC audience, and Man of Tomorrow is now the project that has to prove whether his DCU can actually grow.

Holland says the movie might be Gunn’s best. Maybe it is. Maybe Brainiac, Lex in the Warsuit, Superman, Supergirl, and whatever fan service Gunn is packing into this thing finally gives DC the big mainstream win it needs.

But after Peacemaker Season 2, after Supergirl, and after months of DC Studios insisting everything is going great while the audience keeps shrinking, the sales pitch is not the story anymore.

The numbers are.

Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to hit theaters July 9, 2027.
