James Cameron has spent the last several years saying the killer-machine future he imagined in 1984 stopped looking like science fiction.
So there is something perfect about the way Terminator 2: Judgment Day‘s 35th-anniversary theatrical return got announced Tuesday: with Cameron joking about the one subject he very clearly does not think is a joke.
“I believe it’s safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so SPOILER ALERT: the good guys win against the AI superintelligence!” Cameron says in the announcement. “And maybe that’s a message of hope we all could use this summer.”
That’s a good line. It lands even harder if you’ve followed Cameron’s press run over the past two years, because the man has basically turned “I warned you” into a recurring segment.
He told Rolling Stone that superintelligence is one of three existential threats bearing down on humanity at the same time, alongside climate collapse and nuclear weapons. He also singled out a “Terminator-style apocalypse” where AI gets wired into nuclear defense and counterstrike systems, and the decision windows move too fast for humans to stay in the loop.
“I warned you guys in 1984,” Cameron likes to say. “And you didn’t listen.”
Then, because reality now writes its own satire, Cameron joined the board of Stability AI. In a CBS interview last year, he also called the idea of generative AI conjuring actors from a text prompt “horrifying.”
So no, the “message of hope” line is not just a cute anniversary quote. It is the guy who thinks the apocalypse is genuinely on the table reminding everyone that the ending he wrote still matters.
That is a sharper hook than any nostalgia poster, and it lands in the exact summer where “superintelligence” stopped sounding like something trapped on the sci-fi shelf.
Terminator 2 Returns For Judgment Day
The re-release itself is a real event, not some quiet repertory drop.
Terminator 2 opens across U.S. theaters August 28 and runs through September 2, timed to the film’s fictional Judgment Day of August 29, the date Skynet becomes self-aware and launches its attack on humanity.
The presentation uses STUDIOCANAL’s 2017 restoration and 3D conversion, with screenings in 4K, RealD 3D, and premium large-format options.
Fathom Entertainment and Rialto Pictures are splitting the U.S. rollout, with STUDIOCANAL handling distribution worldwide. Tickets go on sale July 17 in the U.S. through Fathom, with theater locations subject to change.
Everything that made the original a phenomenon is still on the marquee.
Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the reprogrammed protector, opposite Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor, Edward Furlong’s John Connor, and Robert Patrick’s shape-shifting T-1000, still one of the great effects creations in movies 35 years later.
The film won four Academy Awards, sits at 90% from critics and 95% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and even came loaded with a hit single, Guns N’ Roses’ “You Could Be Mine.”
The 1991 sequel remains one of the highest-grossing and most influential action movies ever made, and the big-screen 3D presentation is the version Cameron has long argued is the way to watch it. The trailer can be watched below.
