Amy Pascal finally said the quiet part out loud, and on the record.
The producer now steering James Bond for Amazon MGM says a casting announcement by the end of 2026 is “a good bet,” and whatever the studio lands on, it has “got to be something really different.”
New James Bond: “exciting and different”
The comments came courtesy of Deadline‘s Spider-Man: Brand New Day interview.
Pascal produced that movie, too, and with Brand New Day sitting on the biggest opening weekend in box office history and $1.67 billion worldwide and climbing, her franchise stock has never been higher.
Asked directly about the 007 timeline, Pascal didn’t dodge:
DEADLINE: What’s the timeline on Bond? Do you think we might have some news toward the end of the year about who might play him?
PASCAL: I would say the end of the year is a good bet. We are being really, really methodical. Having worked with Barbara Broccoli at the studio, I mean, Daniel Craig is a hard act to follow. And it’s got to be something really different that is a stirring and exciting and different.
What Does ‘Something Really Different’ Actually Mean?
Pascal could have said Amazon wants a fresh start after Daniel Craig.
She didn’t.
She said the next James Bond has “got to be something really different,” then doubled down by saying it needs to be “stirring and exciting and different.”
That’s a much bigger statement.
Of course the franchise has to move on from Craig. His Bond ran for 15 years, told one largely connected story, and ended with 007 dead on a missile-struck island. Nobody expected Amazon to simply pick up where No Time to Die left off.
But Pascal isn’t describing the obvious necessity of casting a new actor and starting another continuity. She’s selling difference as one of the defining qualities of whatever comes next.
Until Amazon shows its hand, nobody knows exactly how far that goes.
The reports surrounding Steven Knight’s script have pointed toward Ian Fleming’s early novels and Bond’s Royal Navy background, which sounds traditional enough on paper.
At the same time, Pascal’s own description suggests Amazon isn’t interested in simply finding another handsome British actor, putting him in a tuxedo, and running back the formula.
And that’s where things get interesting.
The reported “prototype” Denis Villeneuve has been looking at — Harris Dickinson, Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi and actors in that general lane — already points toward a significantly younger Bond, with Amazon reportedly looking for someone ideally under 30 who can carry the franchise for five movies.
That alone would make this Bond very different from the version audiences have known for most of the modern era.
But Pascal’s comments raise the obvious question: is age really the biggest change Amazon has in mind?
Because when the person now steering 007 says Bond has to be “really different,” fans are going to wonder whether Amazon intends to rethink more than the actor.
That’s especially notable after years of debate over how much James Bond himself should change, including the argument over whether the character should be fundamentally reinvented, something Idris Elba himself said shouldn’t happen.
Right now, Amazon isn’t saying.
Pascal just made clear that whatever is coming won’t be business as usual.
Bond’s Old Guard Isn’t Sold On The Search
Pascal also invoked Barbara Broccoli while explaining the challenge, tying Amazon’s new era directly to the family that controlled James Bond for six decades.
But one of Broccoli’s most important longtime collaborators already has serious doubts about the names being floated.
Debbie McWilliams, who helped cast Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig across 40 years, flatly rejected the rumored frontrunners.
“I don’t want to see any of them as James Bond,” McWilliams said.
Her argument is that Bond should come out of nowhere — the way Craig did — rather than simply going to whichever young actor is currently sitting at the top of Hollywood’s list.
That makes Pascal’s “really different” comment even more intriguing.
Amazon now controls a franchise that spent decades under one family’s supervision, has brought in a new producer, a new director, a new writer, and appears to be targeting a much younger star for a long-term run.
This isn’t simply Daniel Craig handing the Walther PPK to the next guy.
Amazon is rebuilding Bond from the ground up.
The under-30 requirement has already effectively taken Henry Cavill out of the conversation, despite Cavill remaining one of the most popular fan choices for the role.
So we already know Amazon is willing to move away from what a large section of the existing Bond audience wants.
The question now is how much further “really different” goes.
