Jacob Chase already has his next movie, and it kept the Blumhouse address. Sleepover, a new horror film from the Insidious: Out of the Further director, opens in theaters October 8, 2027 through Universal, per Deadline.
Universal had been holding that October date for an untitled Blumhouse Atomic Monster project. It now has a name and a director.
Chase co-wrote the screenplay with Bryce McGuire, adapted from McGuire’s original short story, with the project billed as the “quintessential sleepover nightmare.”
Jason Blum is producing. Chase, McGuire, and Bea Sequeira serve as executive producers, with Lilly Tyson overseeing for Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
The Reward For A $60 Million Weekend
The announcement came the Monday after Out of the Further opened to $25.1 million domestic and $60.1 million worldwide, the franchise’s fifth start north of $20 million, pushing the 16-year-old series past $800 million at the global box office.
On an $18 million budget, the opening weekend alone covered the production cost three times over. Blumhouse’s answer was to hand Chase a bigger movie one business day later.
It’s also a change of scenery. Insidious lives at Sony’s Screen Gems; Sleepover moves Chase to Universal, Blumhouse’s home studio, on a project Deadline describes as horror at a larger scale than the Insidious model.
Interestingly, Chase got his start after winning a Doritos commercial contest that landed him a visit to Zack Snyder’s Justice League set, an experience he recently looked back on with nothing but praise.
The Night Swim Playbook, Again
McGuire wrote and directed Night Swim, Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s January 2024 release that he expanded from his own short film.
Sleepover runs the same play, a McGuire short story stretched to feature length, this time with Chase directing and the two sharing the script.
Sleepover is a Cinescape Entertainment production, presented by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, and the October 8 date drops it right into the pre-Halloween corridor where this label prints money.
Insidious: Out of the Further is now playing exclusively in theaters. Sleepover opens October 8, 2027.
