By the raw numbers, Insidious: Out of the Further is the movie to beat in August.
The trend line is the reason to watch its back.
The Quorum’s new eight-week tracking chart, published by Puck, has Sony’s sixth Insidious film at 47 percent awareness and 48 percent interest, seventeen days from its August 21 release.
Those are the second-highest scores of all sixteen films on the board, behind only Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, the chart’s new leader, which doesn’t open until September.
Among films actually opening in August, nothing touches it, and The Quorum itself names it as one of two titles battling to become the month’s surprise breakout hit.
Here’s the catch: it’s also the only title near the top of the board moving backward.
Awareness has slipped a point in each of the last two charts, from 49 to 48 to 47. And interest, which held firm at 51 all summer, just posted its first drop, three points in a single cycle.
The Quorum polls everyday moviegoers on upcoming releases every two weeks, measuring awareness (have you heard of it?) and interest (do you want to see it?), and the trajectory across editions matters as much as the score.
The Lead Is Shrinking In Real Time
The other film in The Quorum’s breakout race is J.J. Abrams’ The End of Oak Street, opening one week earlier on August 14.
Two weeks ago, Insidious led it by ten points of interest, 51 to 41.
Today the lead is four, 48 to 44.
One cycle cut the gap by more than half, with the frontrunner coasting on a franchise name while the chaser gets an active Warner Bros. campaign built underneath it in real time. The awareness lead shrank too, from 22 points to 15.
At this rate, the lines cross before either movie opens.
Sony’s Near-Term Test
Sony owns the top two spots on the entire chart, with Resident Evil at 51 and 52 and Insidious right behind it, both horror, three weeks apart on the calendar.
The difference is runway. Cregger has six weeks of campaign left and climbing numbers. Insidious has seventeen days and a drift.
The franchise pedigree is real: this is the first Insidious since 2023’s The Red Door became the series’ highest-grossing entry, with Lin Shaye back as Elise Rainier alongside new lead Amelia Eve, and writer-director Jacob Chase swinging the mythology harder than any previous sequel, with a premise built on dragging The Further’s residents into the real world.
And 47-and-48 with seventeen days left is still a winning position. Franchise horror converts late, and the final two weeks of campaign are built for exactly this.
But the crown is Insidious’ to lose, and for two straight charts it’s been losing it a point at a time. There’s one more chart cycle before opening day to stop the drift. Then comes the Friday that settles the whole race.
