Pixar finally pulled back the curtain on Incredibles 3 at Friday night’s D23 Entertainment Showcase in Anaheim, revealing new concept art, story details, and a June 16, 2028 release date.
Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter made the announcement as part of the studio’s 40th anniversary celebration, describing the film as rounding out the trilogy for the Parr family and declaring “it’s the kids’ turn to take the spotlight.”
The Parr Kids Take Center Stage
The big story shift: Incredibles 3 puts Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack front and center as they sneak out at night to fight crime behind Bob and Helen’s backs.
The film is also set just a few weeks after the events of Incredibles 2, per The Hollywood Reporter, with Violet and Dash’s push to step out on their own causing tension with their parents.
The kids set out to prove they have what it takes to become full-fledged superheroes, and Jack-Jack is said to be even more unpredictable this time around.
Bob Odenkirk’s Winston Deavor is also back and has launched the Superhero League, flooding the world with a new generation of young supers following the events of Incredibles 2.
That leaves Mr. Incredible reckoning with a world of younger heroes while the family squares off against a supervillain described as more powerful than all of the Parrs combined.
It’s further reported the villain ties into the idea that not all superheroes are necessarily good, which tracks with a world suddenly overrun with amateur supers.
Frozone and Edna Mode both return as well.
Peter Sohn Directs, Brad Bird Writes
Incredibles 3 marks the first film in the franchise not directed by Brad Bird, with Elemental and The Good Dinosaur helmer Peter Sohn taking over.
THR notes Bird has been a mentor to Sohn, who worked on every one of Bird’s animated movies, and that Bird and Docter hand-picked him to carry the franchise torch.
Bird still writes the screenplay and produces alongside Soul producer Dana Murray, as he’s busy directing Ray Gunn over at David Ellison’s Skydance Animation, which hits Netflix this December.
Franchise stars Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson and Sarah Vowell all return to lead the voice cast.
Pixar Banks On Its Biggest Franchises
The numbers make the strategy obvious. Incredibles 2 grossed $1.24 billion worldwide back in 2018 and reigned as Pixar’s biggest movie ever until Inside Out 2 blew past it with nearly $1.7 billion in 2024.
This summer’s Toy Story 5 just crossed $1 billion as well, so it’s no mystery why sequels dominate the Pixar slate, with Coco 2 also confirmed for 2029 during the same presentation.
Incredibles 3 hits theaters June 16, 2028, ten years and a day after Incredibles 2, and lands two weekends ahead of DC’s animated Dynamic Duo on the summer schedule.
