Marvel named seven X-Men at D23 on Friday and Mystique was not one of them.
So the internet did what it has done every few months since early 2025: it started casting Hunter Schafer.
This time there is a twist. One of the most-viewed responses to the campaign isn’t a fancast. It’s an accusation.
The Campaign Is Back
Within hours of the D23 reveal, Film Updates noted that Mystique and Beast have yet to be cast, and the replies filled with Schafer edits under the #MOTHERISCOMING tag.
Parade reported the push spilled onto TikTok the same night, and Barragers summed it up: fans are begging for Schafer to be revealed as Mystique.
Schafer herself has played along.
Two weeks ago she told ET a Mystique fancast “would be cool,” adding that these come around every once in a while and are always for characters she likes.
The role is open.
Feige said on stage that more casting is still to come, and Marvel’s only Mystique-adjacent move so far is Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Mystique’s adopted daughter, played by an actress who campaigned publicly for Mystique herself and got the kid instead.

The Rumor Trail Is Thin
Strip the fan edits away and the Schafer-for-Mystique story rests on two data points, both from one account.
In February 2025, MyTimeToShineH claimed Schafer was in talks to play Mystique.
In April, the same account said she was “still being considered”. Neither claim was picked up by a trade, and nothing surfaced at D23.
That is the same account whose Sydney Sweeney-for-Emma Frost claim went nowhere. Marvel’s actual picks this cycle, Weaving, Connor, Boyd, and Navarrette, all came from outside the rumor economy, as our tracker scorecard shows.
Note the language: “in talks,” “still being considered.” That phrasing is doing a lot of work, and it’s the reason a viral post is calling the whole thing manufactured.
“Her PR Firm Is Pushing A Fake Narrative Again”
MasteroftheTDS quote-posted the “fans are begging” post with a one-line translation: Schafer’s PR firm is pushing a fake narrative again.
The post cleared 61,000 views and 5,400 likes overnight, and it came with a receipt: a May 2025 That Park Place headline.
That report concerned a different rumor.
When Daniel Richtman claimed Schafer was “being eyed” to play Princess Zelda in the Nintendo and Sony movie, That Park Place said two anonymous sources disputed it.
Its main source said the “eyeing” stemmed from Schafer’s agents pitching her to Nintendo, which the source called common Hollywood practice, and that Richtman’s framing implied studio interest that didn’t exist.
A second source said Schafer had not been the subject of any formal casting talks.
That Park Place was clear that it could not verify either account, and neither can we.
But it is the precedent the viral post is leaning on: agent pitching gets repackaged by a scooper as “eyed” or “considered,” and the fandom does the rest.
Where That Leaves Mystique
Marvel’s real Mystique answer arrives in the next wave of names, and the studio’s habit this cycle has been picking people nobody on X was pushing.
If Mystique follows suit, the loudest campaign online won’t matter.
