The Hunger Games Takes In Over $200 Million For Opening

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:1074:]]No surprise for moviegoers this weekend is that The Hunger Games managed to gobble up the box office.

The midnight opening saw records shattered as The Hunger Games took the top spot for a non-sequel with $19.7 million, and went on to have the fifth best Friday opening ever ($68 million).

The trend continued on to Saturday where another $51 million was won.

Domestically, the The Hunger Games brought in a whopping $155 million for opening weekend, which places it in third behind the likes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million) and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight ($158.4 million).

Worldwide, The Hunger Games finished with a cool $214 million.

In addition, The Hunger Games marks the best grossing film to date for Lionsgate, and with an estimated cost of $80 million — that ain’t too shabby!

And with all the hype, including the added book promotion at local retailers — I’ve actually managed to pick up the book. So far, it’s pretty good!
