HBO’s House of the Dragon Season 3 has found its most divisive moment, and it isn’t the fall of Tumbleton, the fake Daeron con, or the empty royal treasury. It’s Queen Rhaenyra announcing she is having her period.
Episode 3, “Rhaenyra Triumphant,” written by co-head writer Sara Hess and directed by Clare Kilner, spends nearly its entire runtime inside Rhaenyra’s head during her first days on the Iron Throne.
Right before her first public appearance as Queen, she learns she is bleeding, drops an F-bomb, and then spends much of the hour looking like the throne is giving her hot flashes. Her maids also literally say they are going to get her rags.
In our review, which called it the worst episode of the season and rated it a 2/10, we asked the obvious question: Why do we need to know that?
We posted that same question to the Cosmic Book News Facebook page — “Why did we have to know she was having her period???” — and the comment section detonated.
At the time of this writing, the post has racked up over 1,400 reactions and more than 1,100 comments, with the period question alone pulling 141 reactions and 62 replies.
The responses run from full-throated defenses of the slower, politics-heavy hour to readers asking the exact same thing we did.
Fans Defend The Period Scene
The defenses fall into a few distinct camps.
The biggest camp says it is all about stress. “The crown is literally overwhelming her,” argued one reader, pointing to her father’s warning that the crown crushes whoever wears it. In this reading, the period is just one more thing going wrong during the worst first week on the job in Westeros.
The second camp insists the moment is pure plot. Rhaenyra needs an heir nobody can dispute, her sons keep dying, and the episode shows her going to Daemon’s chambers at night. “She wanted an indisputable heir,” one commenter explained, arguing the period means she is not pregnant, which is exactly why she reacted with an F-bomb. At least one viewer went further and read the scene as a miscarriage.
Then come the book readers, who see a dark omen.
In George R.R. Martin’s lore, the Iron Throne is said to reject rulers it deems unworthy — Viserys’ festering cut from the throne is what eventually killed him, and Joffrey famously spoiled Rhaenyra’s ultimate fate to Margaery in the Sept of Baelor back in Game of Thrones.
“Bleeding on the throne is a bad omen,” one book reader wrote, while another put it this way: “she’s going to ‘battle’ bloodied. A dire omen.”
The last camp calls it representation, arguing the scene depicts the very real struggle of a female ruler forced to do the job while being reminded of her “place” in that world at every turn.
Other Fans Asked The Same Question
Plenty of readers were right there with us. “What’s the relevance for the plot?” asked one.
Another admitted they “didn’t even catch” the line at all, which says plenty about how essential it was to the episode.
One commenter flat out called Rhaenyra the “worst character ever” this week, while another theorized the entire bottle episode was “a way to save money” for the back half of the season. Given the budget concerns we have flagged since the Season 3 premiere, that theory tracks.
And this being Facebook, a healthy chunk of the replies skipped the debate entirely and went straight to insults aimed at yours truly. Par for the course.
Redditors Are Roasting Rhaenyra Instead
Here is the interesting part: over on the r/HouseOfTheDragon episode discussion, which sits at more than 2,000 comments, the period scene barely registers in the top comments.
Redditors are far more focused on Rhaenyra torching every alliance she has.
Her refusal to legitimize Corlys’ sons was branded “possibly the dumbest decision of the show” in one heavily upvoted comment, which noted the Sea Snake “has sacrificed everything for her.”
Serving King’s Landing nobles grilled rat while taxing them was labeled “political suicide.”
Another viral comment kept a running ledger: in a single episode, Rhaenyra lost ground with Corlys, Daemon, the High Septon, the nobility, Hugh Hammer, Addam of Hull, her own council, and Alicent and Helaena, while winning over exactly two parties, the hungry smallfolk and Mysaria.
Notably, the episode itself scored better on Reddit than the Queen did.
One top comment called it “the REAL season 3 opener” thanks to all the Tumbleton table-setting, Ulf the White is fast becoming a fan favorite (“Bro has been here for a day and already wants to be a Targaryen”), and Ramin Djawadi’s panic-inducing score has earned its own nickname: Rhaenyra’s “anxiety OST.”
The Debate Says It All
Whatever Sara Hess intended here — omen, heir stakes, realism — look at where the conversation landed.
Ormund Hightower conned the crown with a fake Daeron, Tumbleton fell in the final minutes, the treasury is empty, and the Dance of the Dragons is heading into its bloodiest stretch. Yet the loudest debate to come out of “Rhaenyra Triumphant” is about the Queen’s cycle.
The episode had one job: make Rhaenyra look like a ruler worth following into the fire: feared, respected, or at least believed in.
Instead, fans spent the week explaining her uterus and tallying up everyone she alienated. For a season HBO is selling with the tagline “The Throne Knows No Mercy,” the throne is not the problem. The writing is.
