Henry Cavill X-Men Deal Rumor Goes Viral — Is He Marvel’s New Wolverine?

Henry Cavill X-Men Deal Rumor Goes Viral — Is He Marvel’s New Wolverine?

A new Henry Cavill rumor is blowing up on X, claiming the former Superman actor is close to signing a multi-picture deal with Marvel Studios to play a “major mutant” in the new X-Men reboot.

The claim comes from the X account Craze Cave, which posted Sunday: “Henry Cavill is Reportedly in Final Stages of signing a Multi Picture Deal to play a Major Mutant Role in the new X-Men Reboot.”

The post has exploded with millions of views, but there is one important distinction: there is currently no confirmation from Marvel Studios or the Hollywood trades that Cavill is in the final stages of signing anything.

So for now, this is a rumor.

However, the Cavill-and-Marvel part didn’t come out of nowhere.

Marvel D23 X-Men movie and cast announcements

The Rumor Hits Right After Marvel Reveals Its X-Men

The timing is certainly going to get fans talking.

Marvel just used D23 to officially reveal its new X-Men movie and the first wave of casting, with the film opening May 5, 2028. Release date, full cast, villain, and every rumor are tracked in our X-Men guide.

Sadie Sink is Jean Grey, Kit Connor is Cyclops, Christopher Abbott is Professor X, Samara Weaving is Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette is Rogue, Maya Boyd is Storm, and Adam Driver is Nathaniel Milbury, the alias used by Mister Sinister.

Kevin Feige also made it clear that more casting is still to come.

One particularly big name missing from the lineup? Wolverine.

That naturally makes Cavill interesting.

The actor has already played Wolverine for Marvel, appearing as the now-famous “Cavillerine” variant in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

It wasn’t simply a fan edit or fancast. Marvel already put Cavill in the claws.

And long before Sunday’s viral rumor, we reported that Marvel had discussed taking things further.

Henry Cavill as The Cavillerine in Deadpool and Wolverine

We Previously Reported Cavill Had Wolverine Talks

Following Deadpool & Wolverine, our Marvel insiders told us Cavill had been in talks to play Wolverine in the MCU.

At the time, we were told Cavill could potentially take on the role full-time and that money was part of the discussions.

That information later received some outside backup.

John Campea subsequently said his own source told him Cavill or his representatives had held discussions with Marvel.

Campea said he had been told Cavill’s side held sit-down meetings with Marvel concerning a role in the MCU.

Scooper MyTimeToShineHello also claimed around the same period that Cavill was “not done with the MCU.”

So while Sunday’s claim about Cavill being in the “final stages” of a “multi picture deal” has not been verified, the broader idea that Cavill and Marvel have talked is not new.

We’ve been reporting it since 2024.

Henry Cavill as Wolverine

Is The “Major Mutant” Wolverine?

That’s the obvious question.

The viral post carefully avoids naming the mutant Cavill would supposedly play, but Wolverine would immediately jump to the top of the list based on what we previously heard.

Marvel also now has an opening.

Wolverine wasn’t among the seven characters Marvel announced for Jake Schreier’s X-Men at D23, and Deadline has interpreted Hugh Jackman’s appearance at the event as another indication he won’t be the Wolverine of the reboot.

Marvel could also keep Wolverine separate from the core team at first, something rumors have suggested for quite a while, just like in the comics.

Henry Cavill Magneto Fan Art Marvel X Men

Who else could Henry play?

There are obviously other major male mutants Cavill could theoretically play — Magneto being the biggest uncast name — but nothing in the new viral claim identifies the character.

For now, connecting it specifically to Wolverine comes from Cavill’s previous appearance and the talks we reported, not from Sunday’s post.

Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel

Then There Is Superman — And Snyder

There is another big piece to the puzzle.

Our more recent insider information has Cavill heading back in the opposite direction.

As part of our reporting on Zack Snyder’s planned adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, our insiders told us Snyder wants Henry Cavill back as Superman opposite Ben Affleck’s Batman.

“Oh, yes, absolutely! Zack loves the guy and is very loyal to his people,” one of our insiders told us when we asked if Cavill was Snyder’s Superman for the project.

The key distinction there is that Snyder wanting Cavill and an actual contract are two different things. With Warner Bros. caught in the Paramount transition, we’re told offers can’t go out yet.

There has also been a strange Marvel twist surrounding Snyder himself.

A recent rumor claimed Kevin Feige wants Zack Snyder to direct a Marvel movie, which immediately raised questions about whether Snyder could wind up working inside the MCU.

Snyder appeared to answer that speculation himself shortly afterward.

He posted a photo from the Warner Bros. lot standing in front of the iconic WB water tower with a one-word caption: “Home.”

The timing certainly made it look like Snyder was signaling where his loyalties remain.

So there is potentially a very strange situation developing where Cavill’s name remains connected to both Superman and Wolverine, while Snyder himself has now been linked by rumor to both Marvel and a return to his DC characters.

For now, the firmer information on our end still points toward Snyder wanting Cavill back as Superman for The Dark Knight Returns and the larger SnyderVerse plans we’ve been reporting.

And depending on how the schedules and contracts shake out, one doesn’t automatically rule out the other.

Henry Cavill in Highlander reboot

Henry Cavill Has Highlander And Warhammer

While the latest rumor claims Henry Cavill could be headed to Marvel, the actor already has two major franchises keeping him busy.

Cavill is currently working on the Highlander reboot from John Wick director Chad Stahelski. The actor recently went viral after new photos surfaced online, with fans reacting to his appearance while filming the movie.

Cavill is also heavily involved with Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 universe as both a star and executive producer. He recently confirmed he will play a character in the live-action project, but his role is being kept secret. Read more about Henry Cavill’s secret Warhammer character here.

Amazon is also developing an animated Warhammer 40,000 project involving the Deathwatch. More details can be found in our report on Henry Cavill and Amazon’s Warhammer Deathwatch project.
