UPDATE: The Hong Kong shoot has turned into a full-blown frenzy, with fans mobbing the sets across the city from Peel Street’s neon-lit transformation to the Hung Hom promenade.
The Highlander production has landed in Hong Kong, and Henry Cavill’s welcome to the city came with a familiar title: Superman.
Cavill and director Chad Stahelski were spotted out in Hong Kong on Thursday night in a new photo shared by James Yen, son of John Wick: Chapter 4 star Donnie Yen.
“Welcome to Hong Kong! Always happy to see Chad and meeting Superman. Excited for Highlander,” James wrote.
Donnie Yen popped up in the comments to co-sign the meetup: “Nice son! Thanks Uncle Chad, too bad I wasn’t there!”
Uncle Chad, of course, directed Yen as Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, and a Caine spinoff remains in the works at Lionsgate.
Donnie’s daughter, Jasmine Yen, chimed in with “that should be me,” while fans piled on with the obvious: “Cool you met Superman.”
Everyone Still Calls Him Superman
Those Superman greetings land differently right now.
As we’ve been exclusively reporting since October, the SnyderVerse return in play at a Paramount-owned Warner Bros. includes Henry Cavill back as Superman.
Zack Snyder has spent the past month pouring fuel on that fire, most recently posting a Cavill throwback captioned “always a good day when this one shows up.”
So when Donnie Yen’s own family greets Cavill as Superman while the Paramount and WBD merger fight plays out, fans notice.
Highlander Takes Over Hong Kong
The photo confirms Highlander has reached Hong Kong for a major stretch of filming.
Crews transformed Peel Street in Central into a retro street scene packed with neon signs, dai pai dong food stalls, and a temple, per the South China Morning Post.
Cavill filmed Thursday night in a thick leather jacket despite record heat, the same jacket he is wearing in Yen’s photo, with dozens of extras dressed for a New Year countdown scene set in the year 2040.
Hong Kong is not just a backdrop, either. Stahelski has said the story runs from the 1500s Scottish Highlands to beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong.
Filming kicked off in late January in Scotland following Cavill’s training injury, and the shoot has since rolled through London and Poland, where Cavill had a blast with local fans.
Cavill teased at Royal Ascot that everything fans love about the 1986 original made it into the reboot.
That was the same outing where he shot down James Bond talk while looking exactly like 007 and set the internet on fire for entirely different reasons.
The Highlander Cast
Cavill stars as MacLeod, with Russell Crowe as Ramirez, Dave Bautista as The Kurgan, and Karen Gillan as Heather.
Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounsou, and Marisa Abela round out the top of the call sheet, joined by Kevin McKidd and WWE star Drew McIntyre as Angus MacLeod.
The full cast listing also includes Siobhán Cullen as Brenda, Jeon Jong-seo, Hong Kong action star Jin Zhang, Wil Coban as Grigori Orlov, Nassim Lyes, Dan Li as D.I. Cox, James Macnaughton as Seamus, and Charlie MacGechan as D.I. Doyle.
Zhang, known to action fans as Max Zhang from Ip Man 3, makes the Hong Kong leg feel right at home.
The franchise also got a scare this month when original Highlander star Christopher Lambert collapsed at Steel City Con, though the actor bounced back fast.
No Release Date Yet
Amazon MGM has yet to announce a release date for Highlander, which Stahelski directs for the revived United Artists label. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2027.
Highlander is only one piece of Cavill’s plate at Amazon. The actor just confirmed he is still starring in the live-action Warhammer 40,000 series, which now comes with a Deathwatch animated companion series.
And if the Superman greetings keep coming? Well. There can be only one.
