Henry Cavill has finally said it himself.
Hours after Variety made the Deathwatch animated series official on Monday, Cavill posted a lengthy statement to Instagram confirming the entire Warhammer 40,000 slate at Amazon, and settling the one question the trades never answered.
Cavill opened by acknowledging the news got ahead of them last week, saying the team wanted to let the dust settle and finalize some deals before stepping up to “now confirm some rumours.” The post racked up more than 460,000 likes within its first several hours.
Cavill Confirms He’s Still The Star
The headline sits near the bottom of the post. Addressing fans who have been asking whether he will still lead the live-action TV series, Cavill answered: “rest assured, I most certainly will!”
As for who he is playing, that “shall remain a secret for now.”
It matters because this is the first time Cavill has directly addressed his on-screen role in years. Last week’s Games Workshop annual report and Monday’s trade stories dealt strictly in producer credits, and three and a half years of near silence had fans openly wondering whether the star was still attached at all.
Now he is on record, and the character guessing game — everything from Demetrian Titus to a Primarch like Roboute Guilliman — officially has fuel through whenever they decide to tell us.
Flanagan Is Already Deep Into The Story
Cavill also confirmed firsthand that he and Natalie Viscuso are bringing Mike Flanagan aboard to write the live-action series, as first revealed in last week’s Games Workshop annual report.
Per Cavill, they have already been working with Flanagan to shape the creative and are making “considerable advances in story.” He acknowledged the sheer size of the property is a beast to adapt while crediting Flanagan’s talents with helping it take shape.
That tracks with the annual report, which said Flanagan has completed initial story outlines and moves to script next.
The United Artists Connection Runs Through Highlander
Cavill likewise confirmed United Artists has joined the project, and explained why: his experience with the label on Highlander, the Amazon MGM reboot he leads for director Chad Stahelski, made partnering with them an easy decision.
Games Workshop named UA in the annual report and credited the label with bringing pace and quality to the project. Now we know the relationship came with a personal endorsement from the star himself.
A Full Season Of Secret Level For The Deathwatch
On the animation side, Cavill’s framing is worth noting: he describes the project as the newest Secret Level animation devoting a whole season to Warhammer 40,000 — specifically The Deathwatch.
That is a slightly bigger swing than the “spinoff event series” language in Monday’s trade reports, and it suggests the Warhammer episode’s runaway success has effectively handed the anthology’s keys to the Imperium for a year.
Cavill called Dave Wilson a “master at his craft” and confirmed Wilson is the lead on the project, with John Orloff and Blur Studio alongside him and Cavill’s team supporting the effort and keeping it lined up with the “overall universe plan.”
That last phrase is the tell. The live-action series and the Deathwatch season are being built to fit together — the coordinated Warhammer universe Cavill has pitched since December 2022, with him at the tiller.
Games Workshop has been clear these adaptations will take years to reach screens, and nothing in the post changes that math. What changed Monday is simpler: after months of fan obituaries, the face of the entire enterprise went on record that he is not going anywhere.
Cavill signed off his original 2022 announcement with “For The Emperor!” Four years later, he is still the one carrying the banner.
