Editor’s note: The following includes editorial analysis.
Star Wars Theory, the YouTube channel with 3.4 million subscribers, is now covering a rumor that Hayden Christensen is in the final stages of signing a multi-picture deal with Disney and Lucasfilm, with a standalone Darth Vader movie reportedly being developed around his return.
The sourcing first, because it matters. This is a rumor, and a thin one. It traces back to a Star Wars fan page on Facebook on August 19; no reporter is named, no trade has picked it up, and no announcement has come from Lucasfilm, Disney, or Christensen.
It landed in my texts a couple of days ago, and I passed on it for exactly that reason.
But a Facebook post doesn’t reach 3.4 million subscribers by accident. It spreads because it describes something fans already want.
And with Star Wars having lost roughly 85 percent of its theatrical audience, a Hayden Christensen Darth Vader movie is that something, the same way a real Luke Skywalker movie is.
It also fits the calendar. Star Wars turns 50 next year; per what we were told at Comic-Con, Lucasfilm is going big for it, and Christensen is already booked for Star Wars Celebration in April and returns for Ahsoka Season 2.
What The Rumor Claims
The August 19 post says Christensen is reportedly closing a multi-picture deal, and that the biggest piece of it is a standalone Darth Vader film built around his return.
The suggested setting is the obvious one: Vader’s early years serving the Empire between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, hunting the surviving Jedi and becoming the figure we meet in the original trilogy.
The post itself concedes Lucasfilm hasn’t announced a deal or a movie, and that it remains a rumor.
From there, aggregator accounts on X passed it along as a “report.” Then Star Wars Theory picked it up in a new video, and that’s when a Facebook post became a story.
What’s Actually On The Record
Strip the rumor away and here’s what’s real.
Christensen is confirmed to return as Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka Season 2, which is set for early 2027 on Disney+.
In May, insider Daniel Richtman reported Christensen is set for at least two more Star Wars projects as Anakin beyond Ahsoka Season 2, without specifying which.
That’s a rumor too, but from a source with a track record, and it’s the closest thing the “multi-picture deal” claim has to a foundation.
Christensen has also been openly campaigning for it.
Around Star Wars Celebration Japan last year, he told ComicBook there’s a lot left to explore with Vader after Episode III, once Anakin is trapped in his new body and has to reconcile with it.
He’s also said that if the powers that be decided they wanted a Vader spin-off, “I’d be there in a heartbeat. 100%.”
So the actor is in. The stretch between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope is nearly untouched in live action. The only missing piece is a decision from Lucasfilm.
Star Wars Theory: ‘It Would Literally Bring Everyone’
Theory’s video is worth the watch because he doesn’t pretend the rumor is confirmed, and he still lays out why it should be.
His reasoning is that a Vader movie is the one big weapon Star Wars has left.
Lucasfilm can make a Mandalorian movie, a Kenobi show, anything else on the slate, but a Hayden Christensen Darth Vader film maxes out the franchise.
He compares it to Tobey Maguire returning to Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman coming back for Marvel, and says it’s bigger than an Avengers reunion.
The line that matters most: a Darth Vader movie “would literally bring everyone.”
Mandalorian fans, prequel fans, original trilogy fans, animation fans, and the casual crowd.
He notes Maul: Shadow Lord pulled in a good chunk of the hardcore base but nowhere near the general audience The Mandalorian reached.
Vader, he argues, is the one character every faction shows up for.
He also spends most of the video on the caveat, which is the right instinct. The writing has to be “ironclad.” It can’t be another round of Vader hunting Order 66 survivors.
It has to decide which Vader it’s telling, the raw, freshly burned Anakin right after Sith or the colder figure closer to the original trilogy.
And it can’t sideline or dumb him down the way he says the Obi-Wan Kenobi series did when Vader was stopped by a small fire he could have walked around or put out with the Force.
His template is Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, the Legends novel set directly after Revenge of the Sith, which digs into the physical, mental, and spiritual toll of the suit.
He doesn’t care about an R rating, either. PG-13 worked for Revenge of the Sith. And it can’t change anything about Sith or the original trilogy, only expand on them the way The Clone Wars expanded the prequels.
Theory adds that Christensen wants to get back in the suit more than he wants to play Anakin, which tracks with how often the actor brings up Vader himself.
The Timing Fits Lucasfilm’s 2027 Anniversary Push
There’s also a calendar reason to take the idea seriously, even if the Facebook post isn’t.
Star Wars turns 50 in 2027, and as I reported from San Diego Comic-Con in July, a Hasbro rep who works on the Star Wars line told me Lucasfilm is going all out for the anniversary, leaning hard on the original trilogy while covering everything Star Wars.
Hasbro’s own Comic-Con reveals backed that up, and it lines up with our reporting that a massive Star Wars reset is incoming.
The anniversary calendar is already stacked.
The original 1977 film returns to theaters in February.
Star Wars: Starfighter opens May 28, 2027, three days after the actual 50th anniversary of A New Hope.
And Star Wars Celebration 2027 runs April 1-4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Lucasfilm’s traditional stage for its biggest announcements, with Hayden Christensen already on the announced guest list alongside Anthony Daniels and Ian McDiarmid.
Darth Vader is also already the face of the anniversary on the publishing side. Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, the first-ever Star Wars and Marvel crossover, written by Kevin Smith with art by David Marquez, launches in January 2027 with Vader featured prominently on the cover, allied with Doctor Doom against Luke, Leia, Han, and Marvel’s heroes. The five-issue series wraps in May, timed to the 50th. Smith said he wrote it as if it was an MCU movie.
Put it together: an original trilogy-focused anniversary, a Vader-led crossover as the opening act, Christensen booked for Celebration in April, and a rumored deal supposedly in its “final stages.”
If Lucasfilm wanted to announce a Hayden Christensen Darth Vader movie, Celebration 2027 is exactly where and when it would happen.
Star Wars Lost 85% Of Its Audience. This Is How It Comes Back.
Here’s why the rumor matters beyond fan excitement.
Star Wars has shed roughly 85 percent of its theatrical audience, from The Force Awakens‘ $2.07 billion in 2015 to The Mandalorian & Grogu‘s $345.2 million final worldwide total, the lowest for any live-action Star Wars movie.
Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro admitted the movie flopped. On Disney+, Nielsen viewership for the Star Wars shows is down more than 70 percent.
Lucasfilm’s reported fix, as I covered in June, is to chase younger viewers with PG-13 ratings, AI-generated environments, and a top-down creative framework under Dave Filoni, with standalone films reportedly becoming rare in favor of “the next saga.”
Compare that last part against the rumor.
A standalone Darth Vader movie is the exact kind of film Lucasfilm reportedly plans to make rare. That’s the whole problem in one sentence: the reported strategy is built around demographics, and the projects fans are begging for are built around characters.
And fans have already told Lucasfilm what brings them back. Luke’s return in The Mandalorian Season 2 finale was one of the biggest moments of the Disney+ era. Vader’s hallway scene is still the most talked-about minute of Rogue One, a spinoff that cleared a billion dollars.
When The Mandalorian & Grogu bombed in May, I wrote that Disney needs to stop avoiding Luke Skywalker: cast Sebastian Stan, set it after Return of the Jedi, and pull from the Legends material fans already love.
The Vader movie is the same argument from the other end of the timeline. The actor is there. The source material is there, from Dark Lord to Marvel’s Vader comics. The audience is there.
Do both.
A Luke Skywalker movie and a Hayden Christensen Darth Vader movie are the two projects with the widest pull across every corner of the fanbase, and either one would go a long way toward bringing back the audience Lucasfilm lost.
Together, they’d do more for Star Wars than any demographic target or AI-rendered vista.
What To Watch
For now, this stays in the rumor column. Nothing changes until a trade confirms it or Lucasfilm announces it, and the date to circle for that is April 1-4, 2027, when Christensen is already scheduled to be on stage at Celebration.
But the reaction is its own story.
A Facebook post with no source behind it reached 3.4 million subscribers in under a week because it describes the movie fans have wanted since Christensen put the suit back on for Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022.
Christensen says he’s in. The fans say they’re in. Lucasfilm reportedly has a plan that makes movies like this rare, and a 50th anniversary that would be the perfect excuse to break it.
Close that gap, and the 85 percent starts coming back.
