Han Solo To Die In Star Wars Episode VII? Harrison Ford Open To Returning

The next Star Wars film is due out – by Disney – in 2015 with Episode VII and by all accounts looks to feature the original cast.

While George Lucas has passed on everything to Disney and won’t be directing the next Star Wars Trilogy, Lucas has previously talked with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, but perhaps the most popular Star Wars character of all time hasn’t been heard from — which comes as no surprise.

That is until now.

If you are a Star Wars fan you known that Harrison Ford wasn’t big on playing Han Solo as he is quoted as saying he didn’t understand the Star Wars franchise. Not only that, but Ford has only attended one Star Wars reunion, with – interestingly enough – Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige in attendance, along with Christopher Nolan, and brother Jonathan, in addition to Iron Man director Jon Favreau. It also turns out there was a death scene written into Return of the Jedi, but that was scrapped due to George Lucas thinking it wouldn’t go over well with the audience, which would cause sales for Han Solo action figures to plummet.

Now we get word from EW.com, from a “high placed source,” that Harrison Ford would be open to returning in Star Wars Episode VII, albeit with what sounds like a few dependencies, such as a script and director in place. And there is even mention that Ford might want a mandatory death scene for Han Solo.

“Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it, all three of them are,” EW’s source said.

While there are no specific quotes from Harrison Ford on returning, the article does go on to make a case for the death of Han Solo.

“I thought he should have died in the last one to give it some bottom…George didn’t think there was any future in dead Han toys,” Harrison Ford is quoted as saying from an ABC interview from 2010.

As Han Solo is a smuggler and as seen in his previous Star Wars films has come close to meeting his demise numerous times, it wouldn’t really be all that far-fetched if the character was to be killed off in the next Star Wars film. It also sounds as if Episode VII will be more of a pass-the-torch movie with a new younger cast being featured in subsequent movies. However, as George Lucas himself noted, how would a Solo death scene with the iconic character getting permanently put on ice sit with the fans?
