DCU Fans Reject James Gunn After Skydance Promo

UPDATE 2: The job jokes get an answer, for now: Gunn made the official Skydance leadership team as Co-Chairman of DC Studios.

UPDATE: Gunn spent the weekend answering fans on Threads, confirming the Man of Tomorrow assembly cut is complete and saying he enjoys the hate.

James Gunn shared Skydance’s announcement video on Instagram and Threads on Friday, captioning it with the new company’s tagline: “What once was the peak, is now just the beginning.”

It’s the same video David Ellison posted when he announced Skydance as the name of the combined Paramount and Warner Bros. company, with a montage that goes heavy on Superman and Batman.

The Instagram post pulled in over 112,000 likes, including one from Frank Grillo, the DCU’s Rick Flag Sr.

The comments went a different direction.

‘Sorry About Your New Bosses’

“Holy monopoly,” reads one of the top comments on Instagram, sitting at more than 11,500 likes.

“James, if you need help blink twice,” reads another with 6,700 likes. Threads had the same idea: “Blink twice if you need assistance.”

“I’m sorry they made you post this, James,” wrote one commenter. “They got my boy held at gunpoint lmfao,” added another.

“Are you contractually obligated to post this orrrr,” asked one fan, while “contractually obligated social media post” picked up over 2,000 likes on Threads.

Some worked Gunn’s own movies into it.

“Superman in the sequel: ‘Boravia has a right to defend itself!'” reads one reply, flipping the invasion Superman stops in Gunn’s film.

Another went with the Nazi-hunting robot from Creature Commandos: “Bruh. Come on. G.I. Robot would not approve.”

Filmmaker Matthew Cooke reworked the tagline: “What was once the peak… is now the endless bottom.”

“Sorry about your new bosses,” reads one Threads reply. “Monopolies used to be illegal. Now they are advertising them,” says another. Author Shawn Speakman added, “I feel icky watching this.”

One reply was just the Star Wars GIF of Padme Amidala: “So this is how liberty dies.”

Writer Parker Molloy told Gunn the post doesn’t read as sincere: “This feels like the time you told people that The Flash was amazing. Like, it’s clearly not what you actually believe. I still support your work and your vision, but this is a bummer. That’s all.”

“Your social media used to be progressive, anti-Trump, and funny,” Molloy continued. “I know you’ve got to post this stuff to keep your job, but at some level it has to eat away at you that the whole point of the Paramount takeover of WB is to promote right-wing propaganda at scale.”

“I won’t support the Ellisons and their right-wing takeover of the media,” reads another reply. “did ellison hold you hostage just for you to post this,” asks one more.

Supergirl Flop Puts Gunn And Safran’s DC Future On The Clock At Paramount

‘He’s Trying To Keep His Job’

The closest thing to support sits near the top of the Instagram comments with 7,800 likes: “I’ve had a job before. I understand why you have to post this. I just hope this means you can keep building the DCU without any aggressive intervention from the other suits.”

The defenses mostly land in the same place. “He’s trying to keep his job,” reads one Threads reply. “He’s a CEO within the company. Of course he’d be asked to post this,” says another.

“They hired him to run DC, and he’s simply doing his job. His creative vision can still remain intact,” wrote one commenter. “If your own boss told you to make a similar post,” the same commenter added, “you’d probably do the same thing.”

One reply noticed who was doing the piling on: “Funny how so-called Gunn fans hate Snyder fans for being ‘toxic,’ then their own day-one guy says DC movies are under one banner and they turn on him too.”

And at least one commenter liked what the new owners are selling, dismissing the backlash as “a lot of liberal snowflakes in the comments.”

James Gunn And Peter Safran Keep Running DC, For Now (Report)

Why Fans Are Joking About His Job

The jokes have context.

Gunn and Peter Safran met with Ellison in person on Thursday, where the Skydance boss told them to “keep doing what you’re doing” with no new deal attached.

Reports say the pair stay on at DC “at least initially,” and Bloomberg reports their contracts expire in April 2027, months before Man of Tomorrow opens.

And Clayface is already tracking below Supergirl, something our insiders say needs to make a profit.

Skydance makes it official October 6.

That’s when DC fans start finding out what “just the beginning” actually means.
